‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ director on Jennifer Lawrence and Philip Seymour Hoffman

Inside filmmaker Francis Lawrence’s West L.A. office sits a framed collection of arrows with an inscription reading, “May the odds be ever in your favor,” a signature line that fans would immediately recognize from “Hunger Games” lore. The director received the gift for his work on last year’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” which saw him take the reins on Lionsgate’s blockbuster franchise from original director Gary Ross. With the release this weekend of the third movie in the series, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” the odds would continue to be in Lawrence’s favor. The film, with Jennifer Lawrence reprising her starring role as headstrong archer Katniss Everdeen, is on track to break boxoffice records, possibly collecting as much as $160 million in just three days of release, according to some early estimates. “Mockingjay” sees the leaders of […]

The Hollywood hype machine is kicking into high gear for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” which opens in theaters Friday. The latest additions to the blockbuster mega-franchise’s media blitz include two new TV spots, a new poster and a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” “Hunger Games” stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth crashed costar Woody Harrelson’s “SNL” opening monologue — a parody to Taylor Swift’s hit single “Blank Space” from her recent album “1989.” Lawrence’s co-stars used the opportunity to tease her about her tone-deaf singing voice, comparing it to the Internet-famous screeching goats. The weekend also brought a new street art-inspired poster for “Mockingjay – Part 1,” as well as two new TV spots (check them out below). In “The Hunger Games” films, Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen, victor of the Hunger Games — […]

‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ director warns Katniss is ‘very alone’

Jennifer Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part1." (Lionsgate)
In a barren Georgia warehouse on a cold January day, Jennifer Lawrence was doing something unusual for the young Oscar winner. She was acting very, very badly. Lawrence was filming a scene for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1,” in which her strident archer Katniss Everdeen was attempting to summon righteous indignation for a propaganda piece designed to stoke a nascent uprising. Katniss may be many things — a fierce warrior, a devoted sister, a reluctant symbol of hope — but a talented thespian she is not, and Lawrence was giving it her all. FULL COVERAGE: Movie Sneaks “She was very good at it,” director Francis Lawrence recalled of his star’s ability to turn in an intentionally lousy performance. “We had a bunch of variations, but we didn’t want to go too far. Some were really broad and funny […]

A screenshot from the trailer for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1." (Lionsgate)
The final trailer for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ teases an action-packed battle between President Snow’s forces and the rebel resistance fighters, with Katniss on the front lines. The trailer, released Wednesday, features some of the same footage in previously released spots, with Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) telling President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore), “No one else can do this but her.” “Her,” of course, refers to Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), victor of the Hunger Games — an annual televised battle to the death in the future country of Panem. Katniss twice survived the horrors of the arena (in the box-office blockbusters “The Hunger Games” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”) and suffers from post traumatic stress disorder as a result of her experiences. The end of the second film saw Katniss whisked from the arena to District 13, […]

A new teaser for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ hints at the growing animosity between the men in Katniss Everdeen’s life. The 30-second video clip, released Tuesday, depicts Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), her childhood friend turned potential romantic interest, in District 13 surrounded by weapons as the rebels prepare to make war against Panem’s oppressive regime, helmed by President Snow (Donald Sutherland). But Snow seems to have his own weapon — the captured Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Peeta, of course, is Katniss’ other potential lover and her partner in the Hunger Games arena, where the pair twice fought in televised battles to the death (in the box office blockbusters “The Hunger Games” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”) aimed at keeping Panem’s people in line. “Everyone needs to lay down their weapons immediately,” Peeta […]

The one-minute teaser, released Thursday, features narration by Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) as they plot to recruit Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) to their resistance movement. “No one else can do this but her,” Hoffman intones. “She won’t be able to handle it,” Moore’s character responds. “The games destroyed her.” The games would be the Hunger Games — an annual televised battle to the death in the future country of Panem. Katniss twice survived the horrors of the arena (in the box office blockbusters “The Hunger Games” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”) and suffers from post traumatic stress disorder as a result of her experiences.
