‘Rise of the Apes’: Tom Felton excited about ‘brilliant script’

Tom Felton in Los Angeles November 2010 (Ricardo DeAratanha/Los Angeles Times).
It’s a big summer for Tom Felton, who says goodbye to Hogwarts with the July 15 release of ”Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.” But a few weeks prior to that big event, Felton is getting into some serious monkey business with “Rise of the Apes,” the Fox film that is enjoying renewed interest in Hollywood with the strong advance word on its Weta Digital visual effects and the career heat around leading man James Franco. Felton, for one, is pulsing with excitement about director Rupert Wyatt’s “Apes” revival, which takes place in contemporary San Francisco and sets the stage for the events that took place in “Planet of the Apes,” the 1968 sci-fi classic that yielded four sequels as well as Tim Burton’s 2001 remake and several television shows. “It’s one of my favorite scripts of any I’ve read,” Felton said. “It’s ...

Tom Felton looks beyond Hogwarts — but ‘wouldn’t say no’ to a return someday

Tom Felton in Los Angeles November 2010 (Ricardo DeAratanha/Los Angeles Times).
In the first “Harry Potter” film, released nine years ago this month, there’s a signature moment at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with the Sorting Hat ceremony,  in which a magical, sentient hat is placed on the head of each student to place him or her in one of the school’s four houses. In the scene, the hat — which has a face inside the folds of its brown, furrowed peak — hesitates with some students but makes an instant decision when it touches the blond hair of Draco Malfoy, who, clearly, belongs among the sinister ranks of Slytherin. On a recent blue-sky afternoon in Burbank, the hat and Malfoy were reunited on the Warner Bros. lot. “Oh, I remember this old man,” actor Tom Felton, now 23, said as he picked up the floppy hat that was part of a “Potter” props ...

Tom Felton: I’m going back for reshoots on ‘Deathly Hallows — Part 2′

EXCLUSIVE “Harry Potter” co-star Tom Felton is going back to Hogwarts – for one day, at least. “I got the call today,” Felton said Tuesday. “I have to go back for one more day of reshoots. So I’m going back in a couple weeks to do, literally, one more day.”   The “Harry Potter” co-star, who has spent nearly half his life in the role of Draco Malfoy, said he will return to the blond-and-sneering persona for a single day of reshoots for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2,” the eighth and final film in the franchise. That film is due in theaters next summer; the final day of principal photography was last June and post-production is well underway. But at last week’s New York premiere of the seventh film there was considerable chatter about the three main stars — Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint – having been notified that they ...

A MONTH OF MAGIC: Hero Complex is counting down to the Nov. 19 release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” — the penultimate film in the history-making “Potter” franchise — with exclusive interviews, photos, videos and reports from the set. Today, Tom Felton gives the Hero Complex an exclusive guided tour of the “Potter” film props now on display at Warner Bros. studios in Burbank. One of the nicest people in the “Potter” cast plays one of the nastiest characters. I first sat down with Tom Felton , who portrays Draco Malfoy with memorable sneer, back when he was filming the sixth movie in the franchise and I had the honor of interviewing him this past summer on stage at Comic-Con International in front of more than 6,000  fans. When I heard he would be in Los Angeles last week I lined up a ...
