‘Iron Man 3′: Robert Downey Jr. on Tony Stark’s ‘trippy saga’

Sometimes, even for “Iron Man 3″ star Robert Downey Jr., it’s not always easy to describe where Tony Stark ends and the actor begins. “We fit each other pretty snug, and I feel like when I’m him I know what to do,” Downey told Hero Complex. “At the same time, I don’t know why I know what to do. I just know that I do. There’s still just a sense of wonder to me that there’s something so watchable about this character’s ongoing, trippy saga.” It was late April, and the twice Oscar-nominated actor already had been around the world to promote the latest Marvel blockbuster, the first film from the comic-book-movie powerhouse since the $2-billion success of “The Avengers” last year.  But even during a day-long onslaught of press leading up to the movie’s U.S. premiere in Hollywood, Downey’s […]

‘Iron Man 3′: Kevin Feige talks Tony Stark’s trauma

In the upcoming “Iron Man 3,” a sinister villain known as the Mandarin is looking to destroy Tony Stark’s world. But Ben Kingsley’s bad guy isn’t the only one out to sabotage the billionaire playboy and genius inventor. The film’s producer and Marvel’s chief movie architect Kevin Feige is in on the plan too. “We wanted to take Tony to a place that he hadn’t been since the first half of the first ‘Iron Man’ film, which is, essentially, by himself without his money, without his toys, without his gadgets, with just his mind, his intellect,” Feige said. “We wanted to do that in a big climactic fashion by literally taking away everything that is near and dear to him, as symbolized in that mansion crumbling down into the Pacific.” That sequence, of Stark’s hillside Malibu estate collapsing into the […]

‘Star Wars’: Patton Oswalt reveals his dream plot for ‘Episode VII’

Patton Oswalt on "Parks and Recreation." (NBC)
Leave it to comedy genius Patton Oswalt to figure out a way to bring Tony Stark into the “Star Wars” universe. The actor is set for a guest-star spot on the NBC comedy “Parks and Recreation” this week, playing a character who appears at a Pawnee City Council meeting to filibuster a vote. Oswalt apparently launched into an eight-minute improvisational speech about his ideas for the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VII,” and they are appropriately cosmic in scope. His vision begins with Brian DePalma being tapped to write the introductory credit scroll (as he did for “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope,” Oswalt points out) and in minutes, he’s managed to resurrect Boba Fett and rope in some prominent Marvel characters. By no means is that an easy feat. It’s a grand masterpiece of a tapestry Oswalt’s woven […]

“Iron Man 3″ won’t open in U.S. theaters until May 3, but leading man Robert Downey Jr., along with some of the film’s other stars, already have embarked on a massive world tour to help promote the Marvel blockbuster. The tour kicked off Thursday in South Korea, with Downey celebrating his 48th birthday in spectacular Tony Stark fashion — tuxedo, throngs of admirers, you name it. On Saturday the actor will appear at an event in Beijing, and on April 10 he and Ben Kingsley, who plays the villainous Mandarin in the film, will meet the press (and fans) in Moscow. Following stops slated in Munich, Paris and London, the travel itinerary concludes with the Los Angeles premiere of the movie at the El Capitan in Hollywood on April 24, and a New York date for Downey April 29. Directed […]

Robert Downey Jr. clutches lady love in new ‘Iron Man 3’ poster

(Credit: Marvel)
Robert Downey Jr. — er, make that Tony Stark — appears battle-worn and beleaguered as he clutches his lady love close in the new “Iron Man 3″ poster. Downey and Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Pepper in Marvel’s blockbuster franchise, strike that classic superhero pose as black metal iron men rise around them into skies marked by smoke and missiles. The poster — here’s the full image — is the latest in a Tony Stark drumbeat that shows no signs of slowing between now and the film’s May 3 release. James Bond jilted: Sam Mendes says ‘no’ to follow-up And it appears that’s just the way fans like it. Just this week alone, we’ve learned choice details from the third installment in the franchise, including this chilling line: “I’m going to offer you a choice. Do you want an empty life […]
