Transformers: Five things learned at Botcon 2014

Cosplayers dress up as Autobots. (Jevon Phillips / Los Angeles Times)
For 20 years, robots have never had to be in disguise at Botcon – the annual celebration of all things Transformers that took place at the Pasadena Convention Center last weekend. Botcon isn’t necessarily a hype machine for the June 27 release of “Transformers: Age of Extinction” — the convention began in 1994, long before Michael Bay took the helm of the film franchise —  but it does transform nicely into one. Overall, though, it is geared more toward the group of stalwart fans that have the same sensibilities that helped rocket the mechanical aliens to popularity some 30 years ago when it began as a Hasbro toy line in 1984. ———— For the record: In an earlier version of this post, it was stated that Pirate Clone Pounce and Pirate Clone Wingspan were Autobots. They are, of course, Decepticons. […]

‘Transformers: Age of Extinction': Optimus Prime actor talks tough

Auditioning with director Michael Bay for the role of Optimus Prime in 2007’s live-action movie adaptation of the beloved animated series “Transformers,” Canadian-born vocal artist Peter Cullen was aware that his previous accomplishments hardly guaranteed his place in a big-budget Hollywood movie. “It’s kind of surreal to audition for a character that you basically created,” said Cullen, who originated the Autobot’s stentorian voice in TV performances from 1984 to ‘87. “But I didn’t expect Michael to know what I knew about ‘Transformers.’ I was ready for anything.” Bay, of course, appointed him Optimus in that blockbuster film and two other hit “Transformers” sequels that have combined to gross a staggering $2.7 billion worldwide. Come June 27, Cullen will return in his role as fandom’s favorite alien-born Kenworth K100 truck cum sentient battle-bot in “Transformers: Age of Extinction.” In this go-round, […]

A new poster has arrived for “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” the fourth franchise installment from blockbuster extremist Michael Bay, and it features Autobot leader Optimus Prime holding an enormous dagger. The heroic battle-bot looks ready to spar with any alien cyborg who gets out of line. “Age of Extinction,” which hits theaters June 27, will be a kind of reboot for the franchise, which has grossed $2.7 billion worldwide. Though Bay said in 2012 that “Age of Extinction” would be his last foray in the series, the upcoming Paramount vehicle is now viewed as the first entry in an intended new trilogy of “Transformers” films. A new trailer for the film is due to arrive at midnight — look for the Dinobots, the prehistoric ragers who are new to the “Transformers” cinematic landscape. “Age of Extinction” also ushers in a […]

Exclusive: Hasbro honors ‘Transformers’ history with Comic-Con toys

Comic-Con 2013 Transformers toys Optimus Prime (featured image)
This year’s Hasbro Transformers Comic-Con toys pay homage to the franchise’s 29-year history, and Hero Complex readers get a first look at them. The three special-edition Comic-Con toy sets run the gamut of the brand’s evolution. In preparation for the brand’s 30th anniversary, one of the sets pays tribute to Transformers: Generation 1 — the original toy line that launched in 1984. The Transformers Titan Guardians action figure set features five classic characters: Optimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave and Grimlock. “These are five of the greatest Transformers characters ever,” said Jerry Jivoin, Hasbro’s global brand marketing director for Transformers, in a statement. Jivoin said the figures feature the original G1 colors and sculpts, based on the 1980s designs. Another toy set — Shockwave’s Laboratory — finds inspiration from today’s popular animated series “Transformers: Prime – Beast Hunters” (currently airing on the Hub network) and […]

‘Transformers Prime’ trailer: Producer teases a satisfying end

"Transformers Prime Beast Hunters." (The Hub / Hasbro)
Optimus has been damaged, alliances are shifting and the Autobots have been defeated as the final season of the Hub’s “Transformers Prime” kicks off March 22. The series even stretches its name out in the third season, adding “Beast Hunters” to the title, signifying a new “creative direction.” “The ‘Beast Hunters’ [title] plays to the toy line as well,” said the series’ producer Jeff Kline. “It’s also just a little bit of reminding people that we’re always doing something different.” Something different is apparently on the agenda for this last season. For Kline and the other producers, including Duane Capizzi (“The Batman,” “Superman: Doomsday”) and “Star Trek” stewards Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (who also guided “Fringe” and wrote the “Transformers” movie franchise), the Emmy-award winning show began as a different way to tell the story of an age-long battle […]
