History’s hit series “Vikings” kicked off its second season last month with King Horik’s forces facing off in bloody battle against Jarl Borg, pitting brothers Ragnar and Rollo against each other. The showdown helped “Vikings” attract roughly 3.6 million viewers in its second series premiere and set the stage for a run of episodes filled with fraternal conflict and the promise of further bloodshed. In the season’s third episode, “Treachery,” the Wessex Viking raid is in full swing, and Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) continues his quest to dominate the West. They boarded Viking longships and paddled toward glory and loot. But it wasn’t 9th century Scandinavia; it was 21st century San Diego. (And, OK, the ships weren’t so long — they were two-seaters. But the glory and loot at stake were real.) Chris Castagnetto and Zach Warburg, who had not met before this inaugural raid, were teamed in a race at the “Vikings” Interactive Waterway, a free attraction across from the San Diego Convention Center that the hit show on the History channel is staging Thursday, Friday and Saturday as part of its Comic-Con International activities. Ragnar Lothbrok is leading a major “Vikings” raiding party to San Diego. Comic-Con International attendees are in for better treatment than the monks of Lindisfarne, however: Costumed shieldmaidens will beckon them to board miniature Norse-styled ships, grab a paddle and race on the “Vikings” Interactive Waterway close to the convention center, and fans who turn up at the hit History show’s Friday night panel will receive a free comic book.
