Bryan Singer teases ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ on Instagram

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” director Bryan Singer launched a new Instagram account today with a photo of the first page of the treatment for “X-Men: Apocalypse,” the next installment in the booming franchise. The snapshot of the document, written with Simon Kinberg, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, reveals a few tantalizing details, including a “sprawling battle” at the Nile involving the Four Horsemen, who appeared in the end credits of “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” The treatment, dated June 6, couldn’t be touted at a better time. Singer’s current box-office concern, “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” just surpassed “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” this weekend to become the year’s internationally top-grossing film. The feature has raked in more than $713 million in just over a month, besting any other installment in the series. Singer’s legal troubles still loom — former model and actor Michael Egan filed a […]

‘X-Men’ star Hugh Jackman shows off Wolverine’s exhibitionist streak

la_he_five_questions.50
To be clear, Hugh Jackman says it was his idea for Wolverine to be naked in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” Early on in the new film, which brought in $111 million in its debut over the Memorial Day weekend, Jackman’s Wolverine is transported from a bleak future into a far groovier past, where he wakes to find himself without clothes — and in a waterbed no less. “The scene was written that Wolverine gets out of bed wearing boxer shorts and I’m like, I’m sorry, boxer shorts and Wolverine doesn’t go together,” Jackman said in an interview with Hero Complex. “They said, Don’t worry, we’ll make it briefs. I was like, Yeah, that’s worse. I said, ‘If he’s in bed with a girl, I don’t think he’s getting out wearing underwear.’ I just felt like I was really letting […]

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past': Ellen Page ready to reprise Kitty Pryde

Ellen Page was 18 when she first assumed a superhero pose as Kitty Pryde in “X-Men: The Last Stand.” The 2006 mutant sequel enjoyed a prosperous debut, taking in upward of $100 million at the box office, even if some fans were ultimately disappointed by the way the film adapted the classic Dark Phoenix saga for the screen. Now, Page is back as Kitty Pryde in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which rocketed to the top of the box office over Memorial Day weekend with roughly $111 million in receipts since opening May 23 and seems to be connecting with fans who are hailing the movie as a return to form for director Bryan Singer. “I was just stoked to be back and thrilled to play Kitty again,” Page said in a telephone interview with Hero Complex. “She’s grown herself […]

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past': Simon Kinberg shares franchise secrets

For about four hours in the summer of 2012, Simon Kinberg came perilously close to revealing the secrets of the universe — or, to be more precise, the secrets of several fictional, widely deliberated universes. The busy writer-producer — whose latest blockbuster “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” storms into theaters Friday — had checked into a San Diego hotel ahead of an appearance at Comic-Con International. But before the afternoon’s close, he’d misplaced an iPad containing sensitive information at the annual pop culture expo, the epicenter of geek movie fandom. “I had ‘Star Wars’ stuff on there, ‘X-Men,’ Neill Blomkamp, ‘Elysium’ stuff,” recalled Kinberg, a trace of anxiety still detectable in his measured voice. “It would have been jackpot for hackers. Thank God the housekeeper just picked it up and was holding onto it.” With the possible exceptions of J.J. […]

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past': Peter Dinklage talks villainy, ’70s style

There are many moments of dazzling visual spectacle in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” the big-budget mutant sequel that arrives in theaters Friday. But unique among them is Peter Dinklage’s period coiffure as the villainous Bolivar Trask. “It’s my hair with a lot of product –it’s a mutation all its own,” Dinklage deadpanned in a recent interview with Hero Complex. Directed by Bryan Singer from a script by Simon Kinberg, “Days of Future Past” adapts one of the most popular story lines from “X-Men” history, a two-part saga from Chris Claremont and John Byrne that originally ran in 1980. The sci-fi-inflected narrative takes place in two time periods: a dystopian future in which mutants are hunted by deadly robots known as Sentinels, and in the early 1970s, after the events of Matthew Vaughn’s recent prequel “X-Men: First Class.” The film […]

Hoping to rack up serious mainland box office, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” premiered Tuesday in Beijing, with cast members Hugh Jackman, Peter Dinklage and Fan Bingbing strolling the red carpet in the Chinese capital. Hollywood superhero films are doing strong business in China of late. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” has taken in $55.6 million in its first eight days of release — $5 million more than the first installment earned in 2012, film industry consulting firm Artisan Gateway said Tuesday — while “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” has topped $115 million on the mainland. The “X-Men” sequel is set to open in China on May 23 – the same day as many other countries around the world. The film adapts one of the most popular storylines from “X-Men” history, a two-part saga from Chris Claremont and John Byrne that […]

Channing Tatum to star as Gambit in ‘X-Men’ spinoff film

Actor Channing Tatum is set to join the mutant universe, playing Gambit in an “X-Men” standalone film. Tatum previously had expressed interest in playing the character, whose given name is Remy LeBeau. A Cajun charmer from Louisiana, Gambit has the ability to control kinetic energy, often charging items he touches, turning them into explosives and throwing them as weapons (playing cards are a favorite). Created by Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee, the former thief made his comic book debut in 1990 and has been featured in several “X-Men” animated series and video games. Taylor Kitsch originated the character in Gavin Hood’s spinoff film, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” The project is the latest in a series of films for the busy actor. Tatum will next be seen on the big screen opposite Jonah Hill in “22 Jump Street,” the sequel to […]

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” director Bryan Singer has officially bowed out of efforts to promote the May 23 release due to the ongoing legal scandal that erupted in the wake of a teen sex abuse lawsuit filed against him. “The allegations against me are outrageous, vicious and completely false. I do not want these fictitious claims to divert ANY attention from ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past.’ This fantastic film is a labor of love and one of the greatest experiences of my career. So, out of respect to all of the extraordinary contributions from the incredibly talented actors and crew involved, I’ve decided not to participate in the upcoming media events for the film,” Singer said in a statement issued Thursday. Just this past weekend, Singer had been scheduled to take the stage in Anaheim for Fox’s presentation at […]

WonderCon: ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ no questions, no Bryan Singer

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” director Bryan Singer had been scheduled to take the WonderCon stage Saturday to tout his upcoming mutant sequel. But Singer canceled his promotional plans in the wake of a teen sex abuse lawsuit filed against him this week. So it was writer-producer Simon Kinberg who spoke to fans about the film, stirring excitement with an extended clip showing mutants of the future, including Sunspot and Iceman, facing off against the destructive Sentinels. Notably, no audience questions were allowed during the “X-Men” portion of Fox’s arena presentation. “Days of Future Past” adapts one of the most popular storylines from “X-Men” history, a two-part story from Chris Claremont and John Byrne that originally ran in 1980. The story takes place in two time periods: in a dystopian future in which mutants are hunted by the deadly Sentinels, […]
