Marvel has released the first image of Lucy Lawless as Isabelle Hartley, the new character she’ll play on the second season of ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Hartley is a seasoned S.H.I.E.L.D. veteran helping to rebuild the organization after its spectacular destruction — a key point in Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” that directly impacted the ongoing narrative of the show and the lives of Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his roster of operatives: Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), Skye (Chloe Bennet), Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge).

Lawless, beloved by fans for her turns in such series as “Xena: Warrior Princess” and “Battlestar Galactica,” is one of several new actors joining the show’s ensemble. Reed Diamond, Nick Blood, Henry Simmons and Kyle MacLachlan will each play a role in “S.H.I.E.L.D.’s” second season, which kicks off Sept. 23.

Adrianne Palicki also will be joining the cast as Bobbi Morse, otherwise known as Mockingbird. Palicki’s previous television credits include “Friday Night Lights,” “About a Boy” and “Lone Star” and she was cast as Wonder Woman in David E. Kelley’s television pilot about the iconic heroine, though that show was never picked up to series.

Created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” arrived last year with a great deal of fanfare as  Marvel’s first foray into live-action television. The show initially received a somewhat mixed reception, with ratings dipping in the wake of a strong debut.

Marvel is currently working on a number of new live-action television projects, including a series for ABC, “Agent Carter,” that will see Hayley Atwell reprise her role from the “Captain America” films, and “Daredevil,” starring Charlie Cox as the blind hero.

The latter series is one of four shows Marvel is producing for Netflix. The comic book powerhouse also is developing original live-action series centered on Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage for the streaming service.

Each series will have a minimum of 13 episodes and will culminate with a special “The Defenders” miniseries event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

Shield is lucky to have an actor of Lucy Lawless's caliber-she can (and has) played a huge range of roles and is charismatic. She nuances dialogue, and draws together from herself the character-be it abused wife or Warrior Princess. I don't think Lucy's found her own limits as an actor yet, so just let her fly-you won't be disappointed….
