“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”  is nearing the conclusion of its first season — but before the May 13 finale comes Tuesday’s penultimate installment, “Ragtag,” which explores Grant Ward’s tumultuous personal history.

Those who aren’t current with the series might want to stop reading now as spoilers are ahead. But curious Hero Complex readers can exclusively watch the opening of Tuesday’s episode in the video below, a flashback scene that traces a key meeting in young Grant’s life.

Ward, played by actor Brett Dalton, was recently exposed as an agent of HYDRA, the evil organization that had infiltrated S.H.I.EL.D., the discovery of which prompted no less than Captain America (Chris Evans) to see to the the agency’s destruction in Marvel’s April blockbuster “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

Those events bled over into the world of the series, radically altering the political landscape for the series’ group of operatives — Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), Ming-Na Wen’s Melinda May, Iain De Caestecker’s Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge’s Jemma Simmons and Chloe Bennet’s Skye, who discovered Brett Dalton’s Grant Ward was a traitor in their midst.

In an interview with Hero Complex, “S.H.I.E.L.D.” show runners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen confirmed that they had known about the “Winter Soldier” plot twist well in advance, and had planned all along to incorporate the twist into their series.

“With all the Marvel films, we see the scripts ahead of time,” Whedon said. “We try to have them affect our story in some way because we all live in the same universe and anything that happens in the show or in the movies affects the universe.”

“It’s a very unique opportunity for our show to be able to interweave with these huge Marvel movies,” Tancharoen added. “It’s something that not really any other show gets to do, and to be playing with these bigger threads, that’s something that we always knew from the outset that we’d be able to do.”

“Ragtag” sees more secrets revealed, with Coulson’s team embarking on an undercover mission that sets the stage for the final episode of the first season. Guest starring in the episode are Bill Paxton as the revealed-as-HYDRA- S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent John Garrett, B.J. Britt as Agent Antoine Triplett, Ruth Negga as Raina, David Conrad as Ian Quinn and J. August Richards, playing Deathlok.

Bill Paxton just makes the show so much more cooler. His scenes are so fun.

This show still borders on acceptance. ABC took a gamble and has placed it against very tough competition knowing it couldn't win its timeslot. At the start of the season the characters seemed bland and one dimensional, which has thankfully been addressed as the season has progressed. But the T.A.H.I.T.I. subplot simply isn't enough to carry the shows viewers and get them to return next season. Perhaps its obvious to point out that this is a MARVEL show, So where is the MARVEL? Sure we get glimpses of the companies magic on occasion such as the flying corvette, interior of the plane, and the well done set pieces. But the marvel of MARVEL are SUPERHEROES! Duh, huh? They own hundreds if not thousands of characters but can't scrape one up to add to the show to add the superhero element its so missing? Hell, Ill even take D-man. Thats an inside joke. Nevermind.
So now we come to the last episodes and we are going to do a backdrop show on Garret and Ward? Really? Why? Who cares. If the writers of the show whitewash the murders etc that Ward's character has committed it will kill the series. Bringing in Samuel Jackson for a guest shot as Fury wont do it either. No, that last episode has to be something that people will talk about, something MARVELOUS or this show can roll up the carpet right now and join all the rest that have proceeded it with a half thought out premise and boxed it into a corner of mediocrity. We shall see.

Guess you'll have to wait for them to produce "Superheroes of Marvel", this show is called Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you get over what is isn't, and might start to appreciate it for what it actually is.

  3. @JackSaat says:

This show started out kind of slow, but from ep 9/10 it became amazing and one of my favorite shows on TV right now!

  4. Slepnir says:

    This show is cray cray.

    Bad boy Bill

  6. Theresa says:

Too much of the Ward/Garrett backstory. Could have done with one less “Ward is bad” scenario. We know that already.

  7. allyn says:

I liked how they have seemed to tease us with a is Ward redeemable sort of storyline. Thend of this episode sort of squashed that. They still may try to redeem him, but if so, that would probably be when I stop watching. I don't want him redeemed. I like the new guy they got anyway. (Still can't remember his name though.) I agree with most posters. This show was never supposed to be about the superheroes. This is about Agents of SHIELD, which takes place in a world in a world where superheroes exist. I love that concept.
