When Joss Whedon brought “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” to TV in 1997, no one had very high expectations for the show. But beyond the cult reputation and the scores of academic books it spawned, it was also a talent discovery engine.

“Buffy” and its spinoff, “Angel,” launched the careers of countless actors and writers who are all over the fall TV season — not least of which is Sarah Michelle Gellar, who returns to prime time in “Ringer” after a long absence from television. Meanwhile, David Boreanaz is solving homicides on “Bones,” Alyson Hannigan is bringing on the laughs in “How I Met Your Mother,” Felicia Day is tearing up the Internet with “The Guild,” and “Buffy” mastermind Whedon is directing a new set of superheroes in “The Avengers.”

“Buffy” fans and newcomers can catch up on the slayer set (and their killer ’90s hairdos) with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer — The Complete Series,” out on DVD last year, or via reruns on Chiller and TeenNick. 1. Amy Osterholm says:

What about Spike? Where is James now?

    • Buffy says:

This article is about those who made it to stardom. James Marsters has no star quality. He is where he belongs starring in some second rate shows.

      • Connie says:

James Marsters parlayed a single, brief character arch into one of the most beloved characters on television. Definite star quality there.

He did such a top-notch job of portraying the charming rogue, Spike, that those casting parts can’t see him in any other role. Too bad, the projects that have demonstrated such short-sighted visions are missing out on a great actor and the fans who follow him.

P.S. Joss doesn’t settle for less than the best.

  2. kim says:

Where is James Marsters in this ? I have always thought he did such a great job and wonder if he wants his privacy or if there is some other reason why he isn't included in this and other round ups.

    • guest says:

he still does a lot of acting on tv and movies maybe you have the same problem my mom does once he loses the blond hair and British accent she has trouble reconizing him.

  3. brettghampton says:

He's guest-starred on "Hawaii 5-O," "Torchwood," and "Caprica."

  4. Bruce says:

Last time I saw James Marsters was on the new Hawaii five o , but his character was killed off in the last episode. He was also in the scyfi series caprica for a while. But this article left out a lot of characters

  5. Bob Abrahams says:

James Marsters is a great actor who has had many roles since "Buffy," including on "Smallville," and, more recently, "Hawaii 5-0" and a "Supernatural" episode yet to air.

  6. GuessWho says:

I think James is into his music and fam much more these days.

  7. Drb says:

James Marsters has/had recurrimg roles on Hawaii 5-0, Torchwood, Smallville, Without A Trace, etc., and just filmed an episode of Supernatural along with Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), and just recorded a new CD with his band, Ghost of the Robot, after having recorded a couple solo CDs, plus he was in a couple movies and lots of voiceover work. So yeah, he's busy. Don't know why he wasn't included.

  8. kim says:

Hi, I know that that James Marsters has been in the above mentioned series (and it was really too bad that Caprica didn't go longer than a season). Am very happy to learn he will be on Supernatural. I was wondering why he hadn't been mentioned in this profile of the actors who were prominent in Buffy. He made such an incredible contribution to the series for nearly it's entire run. I am sure he will have great success with his music.

Anyway, thank you, all of you, who offered an update. Although I don't understand the 4 asteriks.?.

  9. noelenecy says:

James is now in the gallery. :)

  10. raffa says:

where is charisma carpenter, why they didnt include her, where is she now? i know she was in the expendables, nothing omore

  11. Ben says:

Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase) is real busy these days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charisma_Carpenter

  12. VashTheStampede says:

HELLLOOOO, anyone forget the james was piccolo is the "so called" dragonball movie, which sucked Donkey D***….. he was too good for that film…anyhow, thats all…Me on the other hand as an anime fan, would love to see James as Vash The Stampede in a live action movie, i think he could pull it off awesome.

  13. Gigi Young says:

This post is rather lame…most die-hard Buffy fans know exactly where everyone is.

  14. Wilhelmina Warren says:

People may not beleive me, but i was recuperating from a stroke in the hospital in December of 1998 and DB and his character "Angel" helped me a lot in my rehilbilatation. I fell in love with the series and when I found out he was orihinally from Phil as "i' and his father was our Channel Six "ABC" weatherman. I was hooked. I became an "Advid Fan" of BTVS,"Angel" and now I am an Active Fan of bones. It was amazing how he was discovered "Walking his Dog" a almost nobody and how he blossomed into a great "Actor & Director" I will always Admire him and his accomplishment. Your dreams can come true!!!!! Mina from Philadelphia,PA. !!!!

  15. Wilhelmina Warren says:

I miss BTVS,Angel and all the gang they made my day. Now I have all DVD's on all even "bones. Thanks for the memories everyone !!!!!!!

  16. toona says:

Anthony Head plays King Uther (Prince Arthur's father) in the hit BBC drama Merlin (now in its 4th season, with season 5 already commissioned)

  17. cil_domney says:

How could they leave off Charisma Carpenter – Cordelia was one of the best character ever and was in both Buffy & Angel.

You can catch both Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters in the new season of Supernatural – Keep checking the series for their guest appearances. Supernatural is a great series.

  18. Ivana says:

That's an odd description of Spike. "… has an impossible crush on Buffy"? Only if you stopped watching in season 5.

  19. Guest says:

It is impossible. She never truly returns his love. And the his last lines in the last episode sum it up.

    • Ivana says:

      That's your opinion. Many disagree.

And what last lines sum it up? Buffy telling him "I love you" and later "Spike" when they tell her who closed the Hellmouth?

Or are you saying Buffy's words are worth nothing because Spike's words overrule hers?

  20. cil_domney says:

Seriously, you should add James Marsters to your tags list – he has a lot of fans.

  21. Veiry says:

I’m a huge fan of Joss Whedon and Buffy The Vampire Slayer mainly because of SPIKE (James Marsters) and I’ve watched the Angel show because of Spike. James Marsters is so talented and charismatic actor, but unfortunately he didn’t get his own tv show after BTVS and Angel. It’s not pleasant for me to watch such a good actor like him playing only as a guest star or in some mediocre movies like Dragonball. I miss my Spike! :(

  22. Brent says:

We named our 3 of our 5 pets Buffy and Spike our dogs and Angel out cat.

    • Gaea says:

My oldest son's dog was Buffy, my sister-in-laws dogs were Willow and Spike, our terrier was Dru, our dogs are Oz and Sunshine. So do you know the Sunshine reference. Say it with Drucilla's brit accent and maybe you'll remember Gaea

  23. Lestat Elam says:

I think that in the season 7 where Spike dies.
No one knows just how much better he is then Angel.
Because Angel admited he could not wear a amult and Spike could.
Also Spike defeated him in the series of Angel called "Destiny".
Truly I do think that Buffy and Spike could have worked if they had more time together.

  24. Zoe says:

buffy/angel all the way! i'm sorry but i disagree with the top post! angel was a far better champion.. he actually helped ppl because he wanted to.. all spike did was one good deed and that was when he "chose" to die at the end.. that doesnt make him a champion in my eyes.. you dont just die and become a champion.. you need to do a lot more before that too

    • spikegirl65 says:

Spike is motivated by love (of Buffy of course) and saves the Scoobies and others many times. Angel is all about trying to balance the scales ( I killed so many people so I have to save that many to get redeemed). Both have their short comings, however Angel's motivation is purely selfish, where Spike's is at least outside of himself. Plus Angel is pure unadulterated evil without his soul, where Spike is still able to love, so how is Angel a better hero????? Oh…Angel should have Buffy, she's really not good for Spike – she''s an abusive bitch.

    • Connie says:

Angel, even before he became a vampire, left his brother in the middle of the street to chase after a shirt for his own pleasure. Spike, wore his heart on his sleeve and cared only about love. They both carried those personality traits into their undead persona’s.

Angel had his moments. But mostly, I found the Angel character to be boring and a one-trick-pony. Spike was complicated and ever changing. Give me passion over angst any day.

I grew so tired of the “champion” tag. Besides, you are not much of a champion if you have to set-up the contest and then rig the outcome.

Angel saw victims as a means to his own selfish redemption. Spike, worked against having a conscious, struggled with his humanity, fought it tooth, and still couldn’t get rid of the buggers. Give me Spike any day.

I would think the “choice” to die to save others would be the mark of a champion. I don’t see how you can label that a negative.

  26. @fyrefay says:

    Dear Everyone,
I would have loved to see more of Giles, and more of the Watchers, their lore, their beginnings, and the beginnings of the first Slayer. I really liked Giles(still do, in fact), and think he was underused in the series–only one love interest, as far as I know, and only sketchy information about the Watchers as a whole. I wish there had been more input here on that. The HIGHLANDER series also had Watchers, and a bit of their lore was included occasionally in the storylines. That is what I wish .had been done for BUFFY. Perhaps in a novel series? Joss Whedon? Anyone?

  27. Angel's #1 fan!!! says:

I lllooovvvee BTVS (buffy the vampire slayer) my mom watched it as a kid and now shes got me addicted!!! i have angel as my wallpaper on my ipod and i just saw the episode where he leaves… it almost made me cry!! i think xander is the funniest, willow the smartest and coolest, giles as the coolest watcher, cordilia the sassiest, and buffy the AWESOMEST!!! i can NOT explane how much i love BTVS it is my favorite show EVER!!!!!

  28. Nat says:

Charisma was awesome in Veronica Mars. Joss did a cameo in it too. Worth watching if you're a Buffy fan, it's definitely on par.

  29. bon bon says:

I didn’t read all the comments. sorry if duplicated. james marsters was also on warehouse 13 recently. the actor who plays giles..can’t believe I forgot his name. have a crush on him as well. he is also appearing on warehouse 13
