Joss Whedon screened his anticipated new Marvel Television/ABC pilot, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,”  at Comic-Con on Friday, revealing a superhero show firmly in the humorous Whedon mold, and one that feels as if it were written expressly for the crowds packing the San Diego Convention Center this weekend.

The pilot, written by Maurissa Tancharoen and Whedon’s brother Jed (who happens to be married to Tancharoen), resurrects Clark Gregg’s well-liked Marvel movie character Agent Phil Coulson, who was dramatically killed off in “The Avengers.”

“I didn’t like being dead,” said Gregg, after receiving a standing ovation from the audience. “But I really loved my death.”

In the new show, Coulson assembles a team of espionage and law enforcement agents, including flying ace Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), surly black-ops specialist Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), brainy computer geek Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), science genius Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and superhero-obsessed civilian hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

The pilot centers on a young father with mysterious abilities (“Angel” alumnus J. August Richards) reminiscent of the Extremis technology that powered the villains in “Iron Man 3.”

Despite an ambitious action sequence in Los Angeles’ Union Station, most of the show’s firepower came from its witty dialogue, which was peppered with sly winks at fan culture, from “Spider-Man” (“With great power comes — a ton of weird crap”) to cosplay.

“I have that feeling I have not had in a long time,” Whedon said after hearing the crowd’s boisterous reaction to his new show. “I guess I’m a little excited.”

“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will premiere Sept. 24 on ABC.

One Response to Comic-Con: Joss Whedon shows ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ pilot

  1. Hand of Fate says:

"The pilot centers on a young father with mysterious abilities (“Angel” alumnus J. August Richards) reminiscent of the Extremis technology that powered the villains in “Iron Man 3.”"

Reminiscent of Extremis? It wasn't reminiscent, it WAS Extremis, combined with the Super Soldier serum (which created Captain America), gamma radiation (which created the Hulk), and alien technology (implied Chitauri tech scavenged after the Battle of New York in The Avengers). Coulson's dialogue in that scene was very specific about what gave the pilot's "hero in waiting" his powers. I should know, I was there and I saw the pilot. Get your story straight, LA Times!
