Marvel head of television Jeph Loeb might not have been able to shed much light on the future plot lines of Marvel’s two ABC series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Agent Carter” — the studio really relies on its narrative surprises — but he did reveal some key cast and directors on Marvel TV’s Comic-Con International panel on Friday.

Loeb confirmed that Lucy Lawless will join the cast of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” in the show’s second season as a tough, knife-wielding longtime veteran named Isabelle Hartley. She’ll be joined by a young English actor named Nick Blood (yes, it’s his real name) as the mercenary Lance Hunter, known to comics fans as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s British counterpart, S.T.R.I.K.E.

The third new cast member is Reed Diamond, who will play Hydra villain Daniel Whitehall.

Additionally, guest star Patton Oswalt appeared in character as twin S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Eric and Billy Koenig via a pre-recorded video and dropped hints that Bobbie Morse, also known as Mockingbird, would turn up on the show in the near future.

Appearing on the panel to discuss “S.H.I.E.L.D.” were executive producers Jeffrey Bell, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen as well as cast members Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Brett Dalton and Clark Gregg. (Anyone not current with the series might want to stop reading now — spoilers are ahead.)

FULL COVERAGE: Comic-Con 2014

During the second half of the series’ first season, it’s revealed that S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated by Hydra, the sinister, world-dominating group introduced on-screen in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” and it turns out that Dalton’s Grant Ward is working for the bad guys.

At Comic-Con, the actor arrived on stage wearing a Hydra T-shirt, exchanging a hug with Loeb, who also wore a Hydra T-shirt under his button-down.

“He’s really hot as a Hydra agent,” Bennet noted. “Better than S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Ward said that he had just finished shooting a fight scene with Wen on a Friday when he noticed a bunch of producers hanging around the set. When the group asked him to meet them in an office,  “I made any excuse I could not to go there,” Dalton told the crowd. “Drink a bottle of water. Long shower.”

But the actor wasn’t fired. He was told he was becoming evil.

Executive producer and co-show runner Jed Whedon said, “We told him he was going to be Hydra and he just said, ‘OK…'”

Dalton took it in stride, “I got to work with [guest star] Bill Paxton. I embraced it wholeheartedly.”

Loeb also screened a brief sizzle reel of the other new Marvel series “Agent Carter,” which is set in 1946 and follows the adventures of Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell, who appeared in “Captain America: The First Avenger” and had a cameo in this year’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

Loeb revealed that the pilot would be directed by Louis D’Esposito, who directed the “Agent Carter” one-shot film that was released on the “Iron Man 3″ Blu-ray release.

“Winter Soldier” director Joe and Anthony Russo would direct episodes two and three, and “First Avenger” director Joe Johnston would direct episode four.

PHOTOS: Cosplay costumes from far and wide

“Agent Carter” is already proving to be a hit with female fans, three of whom showed up dressed as the character to ask questions during the brief Q&A session.

Co-show runner Michele Fazekas revealed that the series would definitely have a more female bent, saying, “We have plans we can’t reveal…. But there are women just as powerful [as Agent Carter] in that world, both good and bad, that we hope to see too.”
