The first official image for the upcoming NBC pilot “Constantine” is out, offering a glimpse of British actor Matt Ryan donning the DC character’s trademark trenchcoat.

The show is based on DC Comics’ antihero John Constantine, a chain-smoking con man and occult detective from Liverpool, known for his cynicism and foul-mouthed snark. Constantine, who served as the lead character in the “Hellblazer” series, made his comics debut in a 1985 issue of “Swamp Thing.” More recently, he’s the star of his own New 52 title, “Constantine” and a major player in “Justice League Dark.”

The NBC and Warner Bros. Television pilot comes from executive producers Daniel Cerone (“Dexter”) and David S. Goyer (“The Dark Knight” film trilogy) and director Neil Marshall (“Game of Thrones”).

“I’ve been a fan of John Constantine since he was first introduced in 1985,” Goyer said in a press release. “This Constantine, envisioned by Neil Marshall and embodied by Matt Ryan, looks like he sprang directly from the comics’ covers.”

Ryan, whose acting credits include “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior,” “Torchwood” and “The Tudors,” isn’t the first actor to portray Constantine. Keanu Reeves took on the role in the 2005 film “Constantine,” from director Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”). The movie was a box office success, earning more than $230 million worldwide, but was met with mixed reviews, especially from comics fans who bemoaned the film’s major departures from the paneled page.
