The actor will play Wilson Fisk, the rotund foe of the Man Without Fear, in Marvel’s upcoming “Daredevil” series for Netflix, the comic book studio announced Tuesday.

The news comes on the heels of last month’s selection of actor Charlie Cox to star in the new show as blind attorney/costumed vigilante Matt Murdock, the superhero leading the latest charge of Marvel comic book characters heading to television.

Steven S. DeKnight, whose previous television credits include “Spartacus,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel,” will serve as showrunner for the series. Drew Goddard, who wrote the first two episodes, will serve as executive producer while simultaneously working on Sony’s upcoming “Spider-Man” spinoff, “The Sinister Six.”

The Emmy-nominated D’Onofrio is well known for his work on television in the long-running procedural “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” but his lengthy resume also includes turns in such films as “Full Metal Jacket” and “Men in Black.” He also has featured roles in upcoming projects including “Jurassic World.”

Known to comic fans as The Kingpin, Fisk is a powerful New York City businessman/crime boss, and a constant foil for Daredevil — the two have waged a long-running battle for the soul of Hell’s Kitchen.

The character made his debut as a Spider-Man villain in 1967, in the pages of “The Amazing Spider-Man” No. 50, and has battled the Punisher and a slew of other characters in the Marvel universe, though none as intensely as his arch-nemesis, Daredevil.

The 13-episode series, which is to premiere next year, resurrects Daredevil for the screen more than 10 years after 2003’s largely reviled film starring Ben Affleck. The Kingpin was portrayed in that film by Michael Clarke Duncan (“The Green Mile”), who was asked to gain 30 pounds to play the traditionally portly Fisk.
