The first photos for “The Day of the Doctor” are out, offering a glimpse of the highly anticipated “Doctor Who” 50th anniversary special.

The images (check them out in the gallery above) feature outgoing “Doctor Who” star Matt Smith (who plays the 11th incarnation of the Doctor), along with his popular predecessor David Tennant (the 10th Doctor) and newcomer John Hurt. Hurt was introduced as the Doctor in May’s season finale, though fan speculation abounds as to whether Hurt’s character is a previous iteration, a future iteration or an alternate-timeline version of the time traveler, or else another character altogether.

The special also stars Jenna Coleman, who plays the Doctor’s current traveling companion Clara Oswald, and Billie Piper, who portrayed fan-favorite traveling companion Rose Tyler, the first female lead after the show’s 2005 reboot.

The newly released images from the episode also include a peak at Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart — a character first introduced in a 1995 direct-to-video story “Downtime.” She appeared in last season’s episode “The Power of Three,” in which she served as the head of scientific research at UNIT.

The 75-minute “The Day of the Doctor” is slated to air Nov. 23. In an effort to avoid spoilers and plot leaks, BBC Worldwide is orchestrating a worldwide simulcast in 75 countries, including the U.S.

The special marks Smith’s penultimate appearance as the Doctor after he announced earlier this year that he is leaving the show following the Christmas special. Scottish actor Peter Capaldi has been named as Smith’s successor.

Looks an awful lot like they'll be using Eccleston/Tennant's Tardis. Hmm…

I was thinking the same but have a look at the console. It's the wrong color.

      • Kyle says:

I think this is the human doctor's TARDIS. There was a deleted scene in the Journey's End episode where the 10th doctor gives him a bit of the TARDIS that would grow another. This could be the grown TARDIS.

Please note the writing on the left of the old man in the final image.

    You know it- Bad Wolf

Some of the wreckage in the background appears to be Daleks

    • RoxanneT says:

… & we all know who "Bad Wolf" is, correct? "I am the Bad Wolf. I create myself." LOL…. Just gotta say that I LOVE IT!!! I am SO looking forward to all of this!

I've been thinking that the John Hurt character will explain the Valyard from the Colin Baker season trial of the Time Lord.
