The “Doctor Who” 50th anniversary special is out in theaters Saturday, and Whovians across the globe are celebrating the BBC series’ milestone.

In addition to receiving a limited theatrical release, the feature-length special “The Day of the Doctor” will be simulcast worldwide on TV in more than 75 countries, including the U.S. The special is set to premiere on BBC America at 11:50 a.m. PST.

The event is the culmination of a year-long celebration of the long-running science-fiction show’s anniversary, with a special panel at Comic-Con International this summer; the release of “An Adventure in Space and Time,” a film about the show’s inception and the first actor to play the Doctor, William Hartnell; a slate of commemorative TV specials about the show and the various actors who have played the time-traveling alien; and a series of live events in the U.S. and the U.K.

Online fans are also enjoying the adorable “Doctor Who” Google Doodle game, Google Street View’s look inside the TARDIS, and BBC’s brilliant interactive timeline.

In Los Angeles, BBC America and Nerdist Industries are hosting an official pre-show, to be aired live from the YouTube Space at 11:30 a.m. PST on BBC America and on the network’s YouTube channel. The pre-show will feature curation of fan-created “Doctor Who” content as well as live chats with guests, including myself. The Nerdist’s Veronica Belmont is hosting.

BBC has been hyping the special with two mini episodes (one starring the Eighth Doctor actor Paul McGann), a preview released last week, and several late-night appearances by Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith and Tenth Doctor David Tennant, who both star in “The Day of the Doctor.” The special also stars Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper and newcomer John Hurt.

Though certainly a commemoration of the show’s 50 years, “The Day of the Doctor” is also, in some ways, a celebration of Smith, whose tenure as the Doctor is ending with next month’s Christmas special. Scottish actor Peter Capaldi, best known from his work on the comedy series “The Thick of It,” will be taking his place in the TARDIS.
