A book originally marketed to “Fringe” fans has become a part of the show that inspired its creation.
“Fringe: September’s Notebook,” a collection of photos, facts and observations from the Observer September — a mysterious man from the future — will appear in the show’s penultimate episode Friday night, Warner Bros. said.
“Fringe” follows three members of the FBI Fringe Division as they investigate a series of unexplained occurrences surrounding a parallel universe. In the final season, main characters Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his son Peter (Joshua Jackson), Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) and Astrid Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole) fight to take their world back from the Observers, a group of hostile, possibly-human men from the 2600s who traveled back in time to take over in 2015.
In Friday’s episode, the Observer September (Michael Cerveris) reveals to Walter Bishop that he had been keeping a notebook. “September’s Notebook” chronicles the Observer’s journey from beginning to end, including the personal stories of the main characters and some show mythology: the FBI Fringe Division, Massive Dynamic, the Machine, the alternate universe “Over There” and the Amber timeline.
“Where we went this season is ultimately so Observer-heavy and it reveals some things that are really mind-blowing,” executive producer J. H. Wyman said in a statement. “September’s writing exhibits what he admires most about the human spirit’s most beautiful quality — hope.”
The series was created by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The show’s two-hour finale is set to air Jan. 18.
At an event at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, Wyman discussed with Hero Complex the way the show has ramped up the stakes in both the battle for humanity’s future and in the characters’ battle with their own inner demons.
“I got terribly obsessed with impact and the impact that we have on each other,” Wyman said. “Each character is on their own odyssey – like Olivia finding strength in vulnerability – but they all impact each other on their own emotional journeys.”
“September’s Notebook,” published by Insight Editions, will be released March 12. The book’s authors, Tara Bennett and Paul Terry, co-authored “The LOST Encyclopedia.”
