‘Game of Thrones’ Season 4 trailer teases war, debuts Red Viper
The first trailer for the return of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is out, teasing a Season 4 filled with conquest and betrayal.
The sprawling political fantasy series, which returns April 6, is based on George R. R. Martin’s bestselling “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series and has become a marquee attraction for HBO and a critical darling. In addition to being nominated for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series at this month’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, with star Peter Dinklage also nominated for his individual dramatic performance, “Thrones” has developed a massive and devoted fan following.
“Game of Thrones’” fourth season is expected to chart the events chronicled in the latter half of Martin’s sprawling third book in the series, “A Storm of Swords,” but will also introduce characters and occurrences from other novels.
The trailer, which opens (perhaps misleadingly) with a dragon’s shadow crossing King’s Landing, picks up where Season 3 left off. Jon Snow (Kit Harington) prepares to defend the Wall against a Wildling invasion. Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), handless and shaken, struggles to find his place in the kingdom. Cruel King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) weds Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer). And the red priestess Melisandre (Carice van Houten) aids Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) in his quest for the throne.
Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) continues her conquest of Slaver’s Bay, after having freed the slaves of Yunkai.
“They have a choice,” the dragon queen says in the trailer. “They can live in my new world, or they can die in their old one.”
The trailer also teases several characters new to “Game of Thrones,” including the Dornish Prince Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal), the so-called Red Viper who comes to King’s Landing seeking vengeance.
“Tell your father I’m here,” the Red Viper tells Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage). “And tell him the Lannisters aren’t the only ones who pay their debts.”
As for Tyrion’s part, the trailer shows him in shackles and imprisoned — hinting at a major event in the novels (though Hero Complex offers no spoilers here).
“I don’t think I’m talking my way out of this one,” Tyrion says dryly.
