A new teaser video shines a light on the seedy underworld in “Gotham,” Fox’s Batman prequel series.

Hero Complex readers get an exclusive first look at the video, which examines some of the more twisted players in Det. Jim Gordon’s (Ben McKenzie) stamping grounds. And “Gotham” suffers from no shortage of villains.

“When we being the series, Gotham City is struggling,” DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns says in the video. “It’s in the midst of a crime wave. It’s battling corruption.”

At the center of Gotham’s organized crime is mob boss Carmine Falcone, played by John Doman.

“The Falcone crime family runs the city,” McKenzie says in the video. “They have relationships with everyone from law enforcement to the judicial branch to the mayor’s office.”

The turmoil following the death of Bruce Wayne’s (David Mazouz) parents could potentially open doors for some baddies, including Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), and perhaps others in Gotham.

“No villain considers himself a villain,” Doman says in the video. “They’re doing what they’re doing for a reason, as twisted as it may be.”

Check out the teaser video above. The series’ third episode, titled “The Balloonman,” airs Monday at 8 p.m. PDT.
