Alfred Pennyworth, the Penguin and more classic Batman characters have been cast in Fox’s upcoming series “Gotham.”

The one-hour drama, from Warner Bros. Television, focuses on the origins of Batman’s ally, Commissioner James Gordon and the villains who made Batman’s hometown famous.

Actor Ben McKenzie, known for roles in “Southland” and “The O.C.,” will star as Jim Gordon, Warner Bros. announced earlier this month, and Robin Lord Taylor, Zabryna Guevara, Sean Pertwee and Erin Richards are now joining the cast.

Taylor (“Another Earth,” “Accepted”) has been cast as Oswald Cobblepot, the orphaned outcast who eventually becomes the gentleman villain the Penguin. Zombie fans may recognize Taylor from his guest appearance as Sam in an episode of “The Walking Dead” last season. In “Gotham,” Taylor’s character is described as having the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal.

“Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath (for gangster Fish Mooney) who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor,” reads his official character description.

“Gotham” has also found its Wayne Manor butler Alfred Pennyworth in Pertwee (“Alan Patridge,” “Event Horizon”).

“A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne,” Alfred’s character description reads.

Guevara (“Burn Notice,” “3 lbs.”) has been cast as Capt. Essen, Gordon’s boss at the Gotham City Police Department homicide squad. She “balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that’s as much corporate litigator as cop,” according to her character description.

And Richards will play Gordon’s fiancee, Barbara Kean, “a sophisticated emergency room doctor” who is “joyful but with an edge of vulnerability.”

“Gotham” will be led by writer and executive producer Bruno Heller, the creative mind behind “The Mentalist” and “Rome.” Danny Cannon (“Nikita”) will direct and executive produce the pilot.

  1. Atomic Kommie Comics says:

Sean Peetwee is also the son of the third Doctor Who. Jon Pertwee.

-Hmmm… I'm kind of wondering-Just WHAT is going to make this series interesting? I mean, the only reason Gotham has any fame or notoritey is due to the legendary Vigilante/Detective. Without him you just have your typical crime riddled metropolis. Not like Arrow, or its CW predecessor Smallville, where we witness(ed) the evolution and growth of the subject hero. it seems to me, that most of Batman fandom would probably prefer to see a series where the young Wayne begins his pursuit of crimminal study in detail-to include his scholastic pursuits as well as his physical training. Yeah, I know that many bought into that whole idea presented in "Batman Begins", that his martial skills were developed through the tutelage of Ra's Al Ghul-but true fans know that this was far form the actual mythological truth. I think an in depth visual history of him traveling the world honing his skills with the masters would be much more intriguing and satisfying to the viewers. Just my twenty-two cents.
