“I love this city, and I see it going to Hell.”

Those are the first words uttered by Ben McKenzie as Jim Gordon, the tireless Gotham City Police detective at the center of Fox’s upcoming TV series “Gotham,” in a new teaser for the show.

The clip debuted Monday during the first episode of the network’s thriller “24: Live Another Day.”

Based on the origins of the Caped Crusader’s longtime ally and friend, Commissioner James Gordon, the Batman prequel series is helmed by writer and executive producer Bruno Heller, the creative mind behind “The Mentalist” and “Rome,” and stars McKenzie, known for roles in “Southland” and “The O.C.”

Other key characters from “Batman” lore are also set to appear on the new show, including Selina Kyle, the unpredictable street thief and pickpocket who eventually becomes Catwoman (Camren Bicondova); tough ex-marine and Wayne Manor butler Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee); Oswald Cobblepot, an orphaned outcast who eventually becomes the gentleman villain the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor); and Gordon’s partner and mentor Det. Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue).

The announced cast also includes David Mazouz as a preteen Bruce Wayne, the orphan who eventually becomes Batman; Jada Pinkett Smith as original character Fish Mooney, a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner; Zabryna Guevara (“Burn Notice,” “3 lbs.”) as Capt. Essen, Gordon’s boss at the Gotham City Police Department homicide squad; and Erin Richards as Gordon’s fiancée Barbara Kean, an emergency room doctor.

Danny Cannon (“Nikita”) will direct and executive produce the pilot.

I never would have given a Gotham show a second thought, but I never would have watched any kind of cop show, including Southland. I wouldn't miss seeing Ben McKenzie, so I won't miss it. He'll hit it out of the park.
