The Flash has arrived.

The first image of actor Grant Gustin as Barry Allen’s super-fast superhero was released Friday, highlighting the costume designed by Oscar winner Colleen Atwood.

The hero is gearing up to headline his own series for the CW, with the pilot for the new show expected to go into production next week. David Nutter will direct from a script by “Arrow” co-creators Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, who has cited Flash as his favorite comic character.

The lightning-quick DC hero has a storied history in comics. The character who becomes the fastest man alive in the wake of an accident first appeared on the paneled page in 1940 and went on to become a member of the Justice League of America.

This isn’t the Flash’s first foray into live-action television, of course. John Wesley Shipp played the hero in the short-lived CBS series “The Flash,” which ran for one season in 1990.

It’s unclear how the character’s return to television will affect Warner Bros.’ reported plans for a Flash movie, to be written by Berlanti, Johns, Marc Guggenheim, Chris Brancato and Michael Green.

Still, the CW has found success with superheroes in the past. “Smallville,” the Superman prequel series that ran for 10 seasons, garnered devoted fan support, and “Arrow” also has become a breakout hit for the network.

Are you excited to see the Flash come to television once more? What do you think of the new costume?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

  1. John says:

    These are exciting times!

  2. Andrew says:

Looks nice! True to the Silver Age design — yet realistic enough for TV.

  3. Russell says:

I hate to be "that guy", but the Barry Allen version of the Flash character didn't appear until 1956. The original version of the Flash was a 1940's character, but not Barry Allen. And no, I don't watch Big Bang Theory

    • Right you are! Post has been amended. Thanks so much for reading.

    • Jim Hughes says:

The Jay Garrick/Flash didn't have a mask, just a hardhat and his speed to hide his identity. Aside from the fact that you'd have to be seventy to remember reading it (Not CWs demographic), the hat would keep flying off. I'm surprised (and pleased) that they're going back to Barry Allen.

    • someone who knows says:

that flash sucked and isnt considered to be the real flash, he is origional flash. They are different characters with completely different origins and stories, I am that guy

      • Jashaan says:

The point of his post was to say that they got their information incorrect. They referenced that the Flash "becomes the fastest man alive in the wake of an accident" in 1940, but that was 2 different Flashes. And that Flash that "sucked" is your opinion. Who doesn't consider him to be the real Flash? The Flash you know today wouldn't be the Flash you know today if that Flash was never created.

  4. James Geppert says:

Jay Garrick was the original Flash who first appeared in 1940. Barry Allen first appeared in 1956.

  5. AnnoyedFan says:

So, when are we getting Wonder Woman?

  6. AriesMatt says:

That costume looks amazing but incredibly uncomfortable in what I presume is leather? Poor Grant. Fortunately for him, they'll most likely shoot in Vancouver which is much cooler.

  7. Thom says:

Wtf is wrong with his chin??!! That can't be real, can it?

  8. @TheMockingJ says:

As 45 year old life long Flash fan, I approve of this costume. It looks great!

  9. enoughalready says:

couldn't be more sick of this never ending superhero garbage

  10. Warren says:

I hope he keeps his costume in his ring like the comic books!

  11. Stanford says:

When the tv series going to start? What are the tv show starting date?

  12. FastAsFlash says:

Wally West is my favorite flash. Humor plus good morals. Watch Flash and Substance (Justice League Unlimited) and you will see why. STILL….. I love Arrow. The CW kinda screws with it a little in making it try to appeal to Teenage Girls, and it scares me to hear about the love interest of Barry Allen's adopted sister, but I think this show should be just as big, if not bigger, than Arrow as more people know who he is compared to Green Arrow. Let's just pray the CW doesn't "CW" it too bad.
