‘Salem’ teaser: WGN America series latest to join TV coven

Dec. 19, 2013 | 10:00 a.m.

The new teaser for “Salem,” the first original scripted series from WGN America, makes it plain that 17th century Massachusetts will not tolerate the presence of witches.

Created by Brannon Braga (“24,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) and Adam Simon (“The Haunting in Connecticut”), the new supernatural drama stars Janet Montgomery (“Human Target”) as Mary Sibley, the city’s most powerful enchantress, and Shane West (“Nikita”) as John Alden, a hardened veteran who has a history with Mary.

In the clip above, actor Seth Gabel, who plays a local witch-hunting aristocrat, can be heard in voiceover as a montage of images flashes by. Judging from the footage, more than a few witches run the risk of being burned.

The cast also features Ashley Madekwe, Xander Berkeley, Tamzin Merchant and Elise Eberle.

Filmed on location in Shreveport, La., “Salem” is set to premiere in the spring.

Witches, of course, have proven to be quite the popular subject for television of late — “American Horror Story: Coven” has enjoyed a banner season with its focus on powerful enchantresses, and Lifetime’s series “Witches of East End” earned solid ratings in its recently completed debut season.
