“The Mortal Instruments” spinoff TV series “Shadowhunters” has found its Jace Wayland, casting “Vampire Academy” actor Dominic Sherwood as the male lead.

Sherwood will portray the “narcissistic and lethally gorgeous” demon-hunter who serves as the love interest for the story’s heroine, Clarissa “Clary” Fray, ABC Family announced Monday.

Based on the bestselling “The Mortal Instruments” YA urban fantasy book series by Cassandra Clare, “Shadowhunters” follows 18-year-old Clary as she becomes entangled in the world of Shadowhunters — human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons — after her mother is attacked and taken by a demon.

In order to save her mother, Clary must immerse herself in a world of faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves, uncover family secrets, tap into powers she never knew she had and team up with a band of Shadowhunters, including the captivating Jace — a skilled soldier and expert Shadowhunter seeking revenge for his father’s murder.

“Shadowhunters” is being produced by Constantin Film and will be helmed by Ed Decter, a screenwriter and producer whose credits include “There’s Something About Mary,” “Unforgettable,” “The Client List” and “In Plain Sight,” and McG (“Supernatural,” “Chuck”). McG will also direct the first episode.

The show is expected to reboot the saga after the 2013 big-screen adaptation “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” opened to lackluster reviews and disappointing box-office numbers. The film has earned $31 million domestically. A planned sequel, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes,” was shelved last year.

“Clary is a strong, dynamic and captivating character that our audience will immediately identify with,” said Karey Burke, ABC Family’s executive vice president of programming and development, when the series was announced. “They will want her to succeed and will root for her on her journey to become who she was always meant to be. The series has a passionate fan base and an expansive universe that can sustain multiple seasons to come.”

Casting decisions for other main characters, including Clary and her best friend Simon, have yet to be announced. The show is set to go into production in May in Toronto.

I'm with all of you. I loved the original cast and I want to shrivel up and die because they won't be in movie but in a SERIES!!! I don't think that I can picture anyone else as Jace or Clary. Like really? Is it that hard to make a movie? Or even let the cast return cause I got pretty close to them. Ugh……….

I totally agree I got to like the original cast and now they are going to change it. Good Luck on people watching the SERIES yuck. BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL CREW OR GO HOME. These people are a joke compared to the real Clary and Jacy. They made the movie.

  5. Nakita says:

i was really looking forward to the TV series, hoping that the original cast would have been chosen. Very disappointed to find out that they won't be returning. I think the original cast went really well together. for me personally JCB nailed the sarcastic, vulnerable, arrogant character of Jace. It'll will be interesting to see how this plays out though.

  6. Gabi says:

18 YEAR OLD CLARY? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T LET IT BE TRUE! Although I think the original movie cast was AMAZING, it would be nice to see some fresh faces. But the characters should not be over aged. The majority of the fan base is made up of teenagers who are counting on the characters to be teenagers as well. Not to mention that Clary was only around 15 in the start of City of Bones. I can assure you that aging the characters would only bring about disappointment.

  7. Tina says:

18?! The point in the later books is they don’t take them seriously or let them do certain things because they are not 18 yet, only Alec. Plus JCB did do a great job at the wit and unique bone structure. They have some big shoes to fill.

  8. Jen says:

I'm glad they are getting a new cast; Jamie didn't fit the description the book gave, and Lily's acting left something to be desired. Magnus was the closest to the book and he had such a small part in the first book. The movie was good on it's own, but us book lovers wanted to see something closer to what was written.

  9. Andrew Biersack from Black Veil Brides would be a good Jonathan Morgenstern.(Sebastian) I know he's not an actor but he has been in a series on youtube called Average Joe. When I read Jonathan's description I imagined Andy.

  10. S gainan says:

Please don't spoil it by changing ages and valentine having dark hair things were changed in the film and it really spoiler it

  11. Emma says:

I am very disappointed that the original cast will not be in this series, however I am excited to see who plays the part of Clary and Simon. I am hoping the series will be more accurate in what actually happens in the book series. Please be more accurate when choosing the characters.

  12. Betsy says:

I agree with Emna, so far pretty good, but Isaiah not fitting in ! He’s not fitting the profile, or back story-1800’s ! I’m sorry, in this case I don’t feel it, & I don’t think alot of fans aren’t going to feel the fit either !!!

  13. Betsy says:

Also, the red head from Castle would have been better as Clary & the PERFECT Sabastian is Detective Nathan West from General Hospital ! Perfect description from books, when I first saw him on GH, I said OMG that’s Sabastian !!!

  14. Shirley says:

Don't like the cast change!!!. The picture on the book cover matches the movie Jace and Clary much better which I thought were perfect in the movie. Although the movie left out a whole lot and changed a few things its not the cast fault. It was the story line that failed which was a big disappointment when compared to the book. I was so looking forward to their next movie only to find out there isn't going to be one. A TV series saves me money, but the cast change—please!!! Once you've seen the movie anything else will never be the same. 95 0/0 of all movie remakes disappoint me because I've already seen the original cast. Try putting different faces on your family, see what I mean!! I urge you to reconsider this bad casting decision!!!!!!!!! If this was the first time the casts were introduced (no movie) nothing to compare to, my mind would accept this, but that isn't happening.
