PBS Masterpiece has revealed the long-awaited U.S. premiere date for “Sherlock” Season 3. The Golden Globe-nominated BBC series, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, will return Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. PT (10 p.m. ET), following “Downton Abbey’s” time slot.

Dates for the show’s U.K. premiere have not yet been announced.

Based on the classic mystery stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, the series stars Cumberbatch (“Star Trek Into Darkness”) as the brilliant, socially inept detective and Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit”) as his long-suffering roommate and co-sleuth.

The series has been on hiatus since January 2012, and fan anticipation has been growing after Season 2′s cliffhanger finale. In that episode, “The Reichenbach Fall,” Sherlock appeared to leap to his death from a tall building but was afterward revealed to be secretly and inexplicably alive.

The mystery of Sherlock’s survival will be unraveled in the Season 3 premiere, titled “The Empty Hearse,” co-creator Steven Moffat told Comic-Con International attendees during the show’s panel presentation this summer, promising a “rational explanation.”

“There really are only a few ways you can fall from a roof and survive,” co-creator Mark Gatiss said at the time. “It’s not black magic.”

A trailer released in August (watch it above) teased Sherlock’s reunion with Watson, making for one of Moffat’s favorite moments in the show, he said.

“I think that’s the showstopper,” he said. “It’s a long, complicated, emotional journey, and extremely funny.”

The trailer also alluded to reunions with Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs), Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mycroft (Gatiss), as well as Molly (Louise Brealey), who may have had a hand in his deception.

The new season will introduce Mary Morstan, Watson’s future wife, played by Freeman’s real-life partner Amanda Abbington. Footage shown during the Comic-Con presentation revealed a glimpse of the wedding, as well as a humorous and heartfelt conversation in which Watson asks Holmes to be his best man.

“Sherlock” has been optioned for a fourth season, but timing is still to be determined.

this show is simply the best, and I think only TV could do it as well as it has been done. I've read that the actors have signed on for a fourth season. It may not air until 2016, but at least we'll get more Sherlock in the future.

  3. Wendy Chastain says:

I am going to have to stream it live from the UK as I bet we're going to see Season 3 weeks, even months after the UK gets to see it. Oh well. At least there IS a Season 3 to watch. I wonder how many inside jokes there will be this season and I hope to catch them all. I didn't do too well with the second season. I didn't even try with the first season. Hmmm, maybe I should watch Season 1 again and try to spot them…lol. Mr. Cumberbatch if you ever see this, I think you did a great job in "The Fifth Estate". I look forward to your performances next year in film!
