Benedict Cumberbatch’s prickly private eye Sherlock Holmes is back from the dead in a new trailer for Season 3 of “Sherlock.”

The 26-second clip, released Friday, teases Sherlock’s reunion with each of his friends. Not that he would deign to call them his friends.

The Season 3 debut, “The Empty Hearse,” is still months away — it’s slated to premiere on PBS in the U.S. in early 2014 — but fan anticipation is high after last year’s season finale. In that episode, “The Reichenbach Fall,” Sherlock appeared to leap to his death from a tall building but was afterward revealed to be secretly and inexplicably alive.

The mystery of Sherlock’s survival will be unraveled in the season 3 premiere, co-creator Steven Moffat told Comic-Con International attendees during the show’s panel presentation, promising a “rational explanation.”

Based on the classic mystery stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the Golden Globe-nominated BBC series stars Cumberbatch (“Star Trek Into Darkness”) as the brilliant, socially inept detective and Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit”) as his long-suffering roommate and co-sleuth.

The two characters’ reunion after Sherlock reveals to Watson (who sports quite the mustache in the new teaser, above) that he is alive made for one of Moffat’s favorite moments in the show.

“I think that’s the showstopper,” he said. “It’s a long, complicated, emotional journey, and extremely funny.”

The trailer also alludes to reunions with Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs), Lestrade (Rupert Graves), Mycroft (Mark Gatiss) and Molly (Louise Brealey), who may have had a hand in his deception.

The new season will introduce Mary Morstan, Watson’s future wife, played by Freeman’s real-life partner Amanda Abbington. Footage shown during the Comic-Con presentation revealed a glimpse of the wedding, as well as a humorous and heartfelt conversation in which Watson asks Holmes to be his best man.

“Sherlock” has been optioned for a fourth season, but timing is still to be determined.

YES!!! So glad that Amanda Abbington will play Mary Morstan! She is so fan-friendly, and so supportive of Martin hobbiting off to far-flung locations for work, I hope they give her some nice juicy dialogue in the Sherlock eps she's in! :)

Benedict Cumberbatch is the best Holmes of the many I've watched, and what cheekbones! I'm thrilled he and the excellent cast will be returning, and hope they keep doing so for seasons to come. Please tell us when in 2014 it will premiere in the states. Not to do so is almost cruel!

Are all bbc television trailers that lame?

    • Jon Locke says:

A proper trailer only teases. Those Hollywood trailers that show the most exciting parts of the film belie the fact that most of the film isn't worth watching. Particularly so, since you've already seen the most exciting parts.

    Finally!
