A new trailer for “Sherlock” Season 3 offers a glimpse of Benedict Cumberbatch’s consulting detective — alive and well after faking his death in last year’s season finale.

The one-minute trailer, released Sunday, also shows a mustachioed Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman), sharing a bed with Mary Morstan, the character’s wife in the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories about the pair of private eyes. Incidentally, Freeman’s real-life partner Amanda Abbington plays Morstan, who makes her debut in the upcoming season.

Fan anticipation for the Golden Globe-nominated show’s return is high after the cliffhanger in Season 2′s finale, “The Reichenbach Fall,” in which Sherlock appeared to leap to his death from a tall building but was afterward revealed to be secretly and inexplicably alive. The mystery of his survival will be unraveled quickly in the new season, co-creator Steven Moffat told Comic-Con International attendees during the show’s panel presentation, promising a “rational explanation.”

The real point of tension, Moffat said, will lie in his relationships with his friends, especially Watson.

The new trailer appears to affirm that notion, with Watson demanding, “I don’t care how you faked it. I want to know why.”

The trailer also shows Sherlock talking to his brother Mycroft (Mark Gatiss, also a series co-creator) about revealing to Watson that he’s alive.

“I think I’ll surprise John,” Sherlock says. “Pop over to Baker Street. Who knows? Jump out of a cake.”

“Baker Street? He isn’t there anymore,” Mycroft retorts. “It’s been two years. He’s got on with his life.”

“What life?” Sherlock quips. “I’ve been away.”

The Season 3 debut, “The Empty Hearse,” is due out Jan. 1 on BBC One in the U.K., and almost three weeks later on Jan. 19 in the U.S., airing at 7 p.m. PST on PBS, following “Downton Abbey’s” time slot. U.K. fans who can’t wait for the new year can catch a mini-episode, titled “Many Happy Returns,” on Christmas Day.

“Sherlock” has been optioned for a fourth season, but timing is still to be determined.
