Meet Chopper, the new droid set for a starring turn on Disney XD’s upcoming animated series “Star Wars Rebels.”

Also known as a C1-10P, Chopper, described as a cranky astromech droid who helps staff the starship Ghost, will be among the roster of characters featured in the new show, which is set to arrive in the fall as the anticipated follow-up to “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.”

That series, which aired on Cartoon Network, was canceled last year.

Set 14 years after “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” and four years prior to the events of “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope,” “Star Wars Rebels” will center on a core group of characters — with the Inquisitor serving as a major villain tasked by Darth Vader to track down the final remaining Jedi Knights.

“‘Rebels’ will be different from ‘The Clone Wars’ in a couple ways, and one is the decision to stick with one story and one main group of characters,” executive producer Dave Filoni told Hero Complex last year. “We wanted fans to get to know the new characters and what they are fighting for. Each episode has its own unique story, while still fitting into the much larger picture of what is going on in the ‘Star Wars’ universe.

“‘Rebels’ will tell the story of a group of characters; in this way it is more like the original trilogy, which followed Han, Luke and Leia, where the prequels showed us the grand scale and political as well as personal,” Filoni added.

Fans might notice that Chopper’s design recalls another figure from the original trilogy — the new character’s design was inspired in part by some of Ralph McQuarrie’s early concept design for R2-D2.

“Star Wars Rebels” will premiere on Disney Channel before airing regularly on Disney XD.
