What’s better than giving Dad a tie for Father’s Day? How about a gift (shot) from the heart?

(Spoilers, people. Beware if you haven’t yet seen last night’s season finale, “The Children,” for this post will be littered with them.)

HBO’s wildly successful “Game of Thrones” has never balked at killing off major characters, but the Season 4 send-off added in a special patricide twist, much appreciated by the revenge-hungry fans on Twitter.

Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), finally recognizing that Tywin (Charles Dance) will never show him a sliver of true respect, wastes his father with a crossbow while the old guy’s still in the privy. This deed is done right after Tyrion strangles his former lover Shae (Sibel Kekilli, who spoke about her demise here) with the very necklace he once lovingly bestowed on her. To understand Tyrion’s turn to violence, read Hero Complex’s interview with director Alex Graves here.

QUIZ: Test your ‘Thrones’ knowledge

In other developments, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Mance Rayder (Ciarán Hinds) shared a milky cocktail in Ygritte’s honor, before unexpectedly coming face to face with Stannis Baratheon’s army. The would-be king (Stephen Dillane) takes Mance, the so-called King-Beyond-the-Wall, as his prisoner, with Snow advising him not to resort to torture and to burn the bodies of the dead before nightfall. Later, after Snow burns Ygritte’s corpse on a pyre, he shares a burning look with none other than the Red Witch (Carice van Houten). Watch out, Snow: The last noble-blooded bastard she met, she didn’t treat so well.

Arya doesn’t give the Hound (Rory McCann) the mercy killing he begs for after he’s bested in a gnarly battle with Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie). Instead, his former road companion/kidnapee steals his bag of coins and makes off for Braavos.

Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) and crew escape an army of murderous skeletons that crack free from the snow and ice — except for Jojen Reed (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), who’s claimed by the marauders. Hodor and the rest take cover underneath a flaming red Heart tree. Bran meets one of the ancient Children of the Forest, as well as the wizened old man (Struan Rodger) who appears in his visions as a three-eyed raven. The man delivers this bad-good news:

“You will never walk again…. But you will fly!”

Cersei, who’s not a dragon mother but a lioness, refuses to marry Loras Tyrell (Finn Jones), telling her father that she wants to stay in King’s Landing to protect her youngest son Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) from Tywin and the scheming Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer). She also butters back up to Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), though probably to set up another layer of protection for Tommen.

And lastly, in Meereen, the Mother of Dragons (Emilia Clarke) faces the costs of her brazen leadership style — slaves longing for the old system, and a man whose child was torched by one of her loose dragons. She chains up two of her fiery pets, much to their dismay.

For now, our watch has ended — until Season 5 of “Game of Thrones” premieres (no date has been set yet).
