‘Dragonball’ star: ‘No one wants to make a movie that people will hate’

April 07, 2009 | 2:25 p.m.

Michelle Castillo has a report on “Dragonball Revolution,” which, for right or wrong, may be the most-hated film of 2009 that hasn’t even been released yet.

Dragonball Evolution

Hell hath no fury like an angry fanboy. At least not when it comes to the box office.

“Dragonball Evolution” is set to hit U.S. theaters on April 10 but it’s already reaching legendary status as the 2009 film fans love to hate on, at least as far as the Internet is concerned. The makers of the live-action film hoped to tap into a built-in audience by adapting the hugely popular manga epic that had already spawned three anime series, 17 animated feature films and three television specials. Fans all over the world love “Dragon Ball” but, well, it’s a thin line between love and hate.

Across the web, fans have been bellowing their anger over the choices made by director James Wong (“The One,” “Final Destination“), who was to looking to streamline and mainstream the “Dragon Ball” mythology, which follows Goku, a monkey-tailed Japanese boy, while he trains in martial arts and searches for the seven Dragon Balls that are said to grant the wish of the beholder.

Fans are frothing on YouTube about the casting, missing characters, the fight scenes and even the hair styles. This is serious stuff to devotees who have followed the manga franchise since it began in 1984 and have shown their allegiance by buying up the tie-in card game, the assorted video games, the apparel and other merch. On IMDB, one fan seemed to think a holy crime had been committed: “I could go on for hours about what they did wrong … may God have mercy on their souls.”

One of the stars, Jaime Chung, who plays Chi Chi, in the film, is asking the fans to give the movie a chance by perhaps waiting until it reaches the screen before putting it in the same category as “Catwoman” or “Speed Racer,” two other Hollywood movies that took hand-drawn fanboy favorites and turned them into spectacular live-action bombs.

“I feel like all movies that adapt some sort of [material], whether it’s a book or a manga or a cartoon, into a film — you’re going to have to take creative liberty in order to change it so that it works for a motion picture,” Chung said.  “It’s never going to be the same, and you can’t satisfy everyone. What James Wong did was he adapted it in a way where it still stayed true to the ‘Dragon Ball’ series, with the essence of the characters,” said Chung, who is most famous for being one of the housemates in “The Real World: San Diego.”

At 20th Century Fox, the studio behind the “Dragonball” film, there must be some executives missing the old days when fans just waited for a movie to be released before deciding its fate. The studio leadership watched in horror in recent days as a stolen, near-finished copy of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” became a torrid sensation on file-sharing sites. The FBI has stepped in but, like a man watching his gold coins scatter on a crowded street, the Fox team knows deep down that the damage is already done. (In a twist that will have execs groaning, fans claim that they downloaded illegal copies of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” solely to punish Fox for its “Dragonball” folly.)

Dragonbal Evolution 2

This is a new era of relationships between fans and studios. Warner Bros. had a muggle revolt last year when it abruptly postponed the sixth “Harry Potter” film for no reason beyond pure profit-positioning; frustrated fans came after Warner chairman Alan Horn and pledged boycotts when the film reaches theaters this summer. Fan debate raged also this year with the Warner film “Watchmen,” the Holy Grail of serious comic-book films, but unlike the old days where a controversy might propel a film for weeks at theaters, this time the movie generated more Internet traffic than box-office receipts and second-week grosses plummeted 67%

Chung, for one, has put full faith in Wong, who she believes has made some controversial changes in order to make the film a bit more mainstream to new viewers.

Among some of the major twists include setting the story to take place during Goku’s high school years, as well as casting a Caucasian actor in the role. Other facets that faced the chopping board were fan favorite characters such as Krillin, Tien, and Chaouzu, who were removed in order to make the mythology more manageable.

None of that compares to the change that has fans pulling their hair: What happened to Goku’s towering spikes? The hand-drawn Goku is instantly recognizable for his massive black spikes, which jut out from his head like he has an ebony agave plant growing from his head. Wong opted for a somewhat more mundane level of spikes for Justin Chatwin’s (“Taking Lives,” “War of the Worlds”) natural light-brown hair.

Dragonball Evolution 3

Chang, for one, said sometimes change is good: “I mean you can’t make it look ridiculous,” the actress said. “When you’re doing close-up shots, and he’s wearing a two- foot wig, it just looks ridiculous on film. It’s so different from something that’s from a cartoon to something that’s filming something on film. It’s a completely different world, and it was a huge challenge for James, and I feel like he really overcame.”

Chung also believes the cast was well chosen – despite the fact that they might not look like their traditional Japanese characters. The cast includes Asian superstar Chow Yun-Fat (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon“) and Emmy Rossum (“Phantom of the Opera“).

Chung said there are plenty of reasons for fans to give Wong’s movie a chance, whether it’s the high-intensity action scenes (shot with a Phantom HD camera for frame rapidity that slows combat for a closer view) or the care given to make sure each character got their own fighting style (Chung’s Chi Chi, for instance, uses taekwondo, allowing her to “look pretty on the outside, but fight like a dude”).

In an unconventional move, “Dragonball” was released  first in Asia (as early as March 12, 2008) and the film has done well despite bootleg copies hitting the market. The film passed the $22 million mark at the end of March, according to Box Office Mojo, and that without any screenings yet in South America,  North America or most of Europe.

The reviews by non-believers have also been more kind; Variety’s Russell Edwards wrote of the film: A popular Japanese manga series gets a pleasing if paint-by-numbers live-action makeover in “Dragonball Evolution,” which half-heartedly tries to keep the faith for its pubescent male fan base.”

Chung said “Dragonball” is just beginning its fight to win over fans.

“No one wants to make a movie that people will hate,” Chung said. “We really want people to enjoy the movie for what it really is and to come in with an open mind and to understand where James Wong was trying to come from. Regardless of whether or not the fans will agree with it, they will be entertained. It has so many great elements like a story of love and friendship, and it’s an adventure with loss and sacrifice and finding your inner strength and destiny. I don’t feel like there is a dull moment in this film.”

    Haters are stupid.
    The movie is great
i from spain, i see DB in 1989.
Los fans no saben lo que quieren

  2. Janet Wu says:

It's not only fanboys who hate what they have done to the series. I grew up watching the cartoon with my father. Since I was five years old, every day after school, we would sit together and watch Dragonball and Dragonball Z, so it has a special place in my heart. Did the director even watch Dragonball, let alone read any of it?
To me this seems to be just another attempt at making money off of the name of a popular series while giving only a passing nod to the series itself.
How can you even think of making Dragonball without Krillin, Tien, and Chaouzu?
Were you just trying to make an action film? Fine, then don't call it Dragonball. If you can't be true to the series why even bother?
And Ms. Chung, while I can be entertained by your acting, a train wreck can also be entertaining…but I wouldn't pay to go see it, or take my children. If your going to do something…do it right or not at all.

    • Nicely said, i agree with you 100 % AND IM ENGLISH!!! for goodness sake

      • z warrior says:

Yes I also agree it seems like they didnt even read or watch any dbz or dragonball. All that stuff they said about the reason they made changes was for adaption for a newer audience is BS. HELLO it was made back in the late 80s. And with the technology we have now using an excuse that a 2 ft wig would look silly is crap. Furthermore having said that they dont even have the same outfits and bulmas hair iz blue… really is that hard to make someones hair the right color.. and also if you did read or watch anything db or dbz related you would know that a sayians hair never changes from birth and is completely black…. so I

Dont know if you have ever heard the phrase “dont ruin a clAssic” or “if it aint broke dont fix it” cause this movie is all sorts of messed up… so next time u amature actors, producers, and directors try to take something as popular as dbz or db and make a live movie. Actualy read and watch it first. And in case you guys are still clueless there Re countless fans who could point you in the right direction. Also one last thing im a white boy saying this but why the hell is goku white…… ive seen better dbz on cosplay thN on this movie

  3. Fringe says:

to 007, haters are not stupid as your small brain thinking.. if u think the movie is great, than its yours
to janet wu, i honestly have the same condition as your. since that time..too (probably). btw, your opinion will be appreciated. im sure
now its my turn, hmm… where do i start… Well, let say my friends told me about 5 days ago…
I asked how was the movie? he said "worst". Then im curious how bad this movie is… i checked on the internet, many sites. i cant believe it there are so many chaos everytime i saw it..
this movie is really bring flame! thats my thought. i plan to watch it only in dvds, just curious what in the name why did they hate it. thats my opinions, sorry if there's so many misspronounce or bad grammar

  4. Miquelo says:

Chung: have you seen the MOVIE?????
I mean, the fight are so short and the ending is totally confusing and anticlimatic.
This movie sucks and no one would be talking about it if it didn't have the tilte of "Dragon Ball".
Besides, the plot line is so rush, so full of holes, I mean, just because Wong try it doesn't mean he got it right.

  5. Dragonball De Evolut says:

what i don't get is how people can be sheep. I could make a movie where goku is a female and then say he's transexual because I want to please everyone. I could make him fall in love because he should not have any of those lovebable quirks he had in series and for some reason thats not realistic. 20 minutes can't save this film. Boot leg comparison can't save it. If you read the script it is an insult to the fans an the intelligence of the non fan. Its racist in that it strives to be as westernized as possible. I fear hollywood will never let go of the caucasian protagonist in a foreign big budget movie.
Ok forget the other characters and judge this movie as a whole Yes we know the movie shows no effort on our part. FOX ARE GENIUSES AND SHOULD BE SUED FOR FRAUD FOR FALSIFYING INFO ON THE MINISCULE BUDGET. USUALLY U SACRIFICE STORY FOR SOMETHING BUT NOT THIS. In the age of twilight we are like robots that will accept anything as a form of . Truth is I don't get this realism mantra . Dragonball is a fantasy REALISM IS CODE FOR DIRT CHEAP. FOX NEVER HAD ANY FAITH IN THE SERIES SO THEY MADE IT IN THE CHEAPEST WAY POSSIBLE. DARK KNIGHT MAY HAVE RUINED ALL THE OTHER ANIME MOVIES FOR US ALL I'VE SEEN THE MOVIE IT SUCKS. g

  6. Doritos says:

Some people waste their time creating blogs, forum and websites to HATE a movie, and they do daily updates, and if you go in one of them you'll see how immature they are and stupid, i'm a fanboy of dragonball, i know they could have done a better movie but it is NOT as bad as tthese ''haters'' say, they overreact too much, ''oh goku is not an asian'', come on….
Watch the movie ON THEATERS, its worth, its a fun and entertaining movie, go with ur friends, family and have fun….

    • Mike says:

I have to agree with you. The thing I find funny is if goku would have been an asian then people would have still said he didnt look right. And no the movie was not as bad as people said it to be. It was by no means the best movie, I would actually rate it as average and extremely fun to watch in theaters…honestly the movie was alot of fun and its something that when I'm just flipping around the channels and see it on can actually watch. Now if they are going to continue and do another movie with hopefully a much higher budget I hope that they will just update there methods a little and they will most deff make that great adaptation movie that I know they are capable of

  7. I dread this movie with every fiber of my being. It is absolutely and categorically impossible to turn Dragonball Z into a live-action movie. This movie is going to be a catastrophy.

  8. Eh. I think the movie looks worse than the anime. And that's saying something.

  9. Janet, you do recall that the characters you just mentioned don't appear in the first few story arcs, right? At first all we have are Goku and Bulma, with the other characters filtering in. Krillin is probably the last of the DBZ holdovers to even show up in the first series.
That's not to say that some of the fan complaints aren't legit, and it they may have taken too many liberties with the source material (which tends to bother me about these transitions, and I fully accepted the changes in Transformers) but Chung has a point about the hair. Personally, a line that Goku's namesake ancestor was the one from the cartoon, and this Goku's recessive Sayan (yes, I used the American version–deal with it, fanboys!) genes can be tapped might fix many of the problems, just by setting the movie many generations after the original series.
Still, I'm curious to see this movie. It looks interesting at any rate.

  10. Sam says:

Fox, Fox, Fox … (in a descending tone) …
I grew up in an age when you didn't sacrifice quality for a quick box-office pickup. The 20th Century Fox logo is, or, I should say, was, iconic. It accompanies many of my most fantastic childhood memories. But somewhere along the line, you lost your way.
Over the past few years, you have released bad film after bad film. It would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic – in reverse chronological order: Dragonall Evolution; X-men origins Wolverine (which I haven't seen but have read reviews of); The Day the Earth Stood Still; City of Ember; The Happening; Babylon AD; Max Payne; Jumper; Meet the Spartans; AvP Requiem; Hitman; FF2: Rise of the Silver Surfer; Die Hard 4; Epic Movie; Eragon; X-men: The Last Stand.
ALL of these movies were big budget releases, and all of them underperformed, from a fan's point of view, either critically or commercially, or both. I, as the movie going viewer, have become so fed up of your attempts to peddle what is, in my opinion, for all intensive purposes cinematic filth that I find myself moving to the point where I will REFUSE to go and see anything made, produced or distributed by you.
A small look at some of those films, and the problems they encountered at release, will tell you what's wrong. Stories of how you interfered to no ends on the set of Babylon AD; Tom Rothman's petty prejudices DICTATING the direction of a story, i.e. I don't want robot men on screen so no robotic-humanoid Galactus and no Sentinels in X-men; Die Hard 4 and the whoring out of a great adult franchise to a pg-13 rating; AvP films with virtually no discernable plot (or if there is one a miserable one at that).
It all reminds me of a story told by Kevin Smith, about a producer, Mr Peters, and his rantings on about how he didn't want Superman to wear his iconic suit, or fly; his desire for meaningless set pieces (the giant spider) that in NO WAY whatsoever advance the plot; or maybe a complete misunderstanding of the nature of the storiy (i.e. We need Sean Penn for Superman – a f*cking k*ller). From my position as a consumer, Fox is run by a group of Mr. Peters. You are, in effect, releasing Wild Wild West after Wild Wild West; and now that people are becoming savy too it, you moan on about how it's unfair that such tripe draws such widespread and unanimous criticism. From my externalist perspective, you are a bunch of greedy men in the company office talking about how they can screw me over. You don't care about me – actions speak louder than words. Your action of releasing consistently low quality or largely disappointing films speaks far louder than your P.R. "We are always committed to producing high quality entertainment" nonsense.
If you hurt you consumer base, or if you disrespect it, the respect you have garned for yourself over the previous 3-4 decades will only last on reserve for so long. But, hell, you don't care do you. If you did, things would have chanegd a long time ago.

    • anon says:

You mentioned Eragon, and this movie illustrates a point that can be used in argument again DB Evolution very well.

Eragon is based on a book with 3 following volumes to it, but it botched the story so much that it cannot even try to continue. 2 enemies that didn't die until the third book, were killed off in the movie, leaving a major plot device missing.

DB Evolution, has so many characters missing, that it too cannot hope for a sequel, even if they wanted one. The best friend character is gone, leaving no depth to the main character, and several side characters that had important roles in moving the plot don't even exist.

  11. Kame says:

This was the worst movie I have ever seen. As a standalone film, it's terrible. As a Dragon Ball adaptation it was a slap-in-the-face.
Do this idiots think that everyone has realised that you can stick closely to the source material and still have a good movie? Just look at movies like 300. These morons need to stop making excuses and trying to swindle everyone. Sorry, but the 'wait until it comes out in theaters and judge it' ploy isn't going to work, especially since they're hungry to make sequels. It's not about pleasing people, it's about the money. Cold, hard, cash.
Goku never went to high school. He's not a skinny boy who chases after girls and cheats at his training.
Bulma isn't the reincarnation of Laura Croft.
Chi-Chi isn't the popular high school 'it-girl' straight off The Real World.
    Roshi's not a middle-aged clean-cut man who's embarrassed and afraid to be a pervert.
Piccolo is not some random alien who wants to take over Earth for no reason. He never controlled the Oozaru in the manga/anime.
…And how the heck is 'Goku' the same Oozaru that helped Piccolo 2000 years ago if he's only 18? Seriously, Wong is a no-talent hack. All of these people, all of 20th Century Fox needs to STAY AWAY FROM DRAGON BALL!!! Don't believe me? look at the number of signatures in the petition against this movie and any possible sequels. See how much the signature count has risen since the movie's release.

"
At least Speed Racer made most of its money back, and was considered an underdog. I doubt people will feel that way about DB: E, though.
"Fans are frothing on YouTube "

'“I feel like all movies that adapt some sort of [material], whether it’s a book or a manga or a cartoon, into a film — you’re going to have to take creative liberty in order to change it so that it works for a motion picture,” Chung said.'
Too bad it's been changed to the point that it doesn't work for anyone but the execs at FOX.
" “I mean you can’t make it look ridiculous,” the actress said."
Yeah, the acting and writing look ridiculous enough already.
"Chung said there are plenty of reasons for fans to give Wong's movie a chance, whether it's the high-intensity action scenes (shot with a Phantom HD camera for frame rapidity that slows combat for a closer view) or the care given to make sure each character got their own fighting style (Chung's Chi Chi, for instance, uses Tae Kwon Do, allowing her to “look pretty on the outside, but fight like a dude”)."
Try to sugar-coat it all you want, it still looks like crap.
"and the film has done well despite bootleg copies hitting the market. The film passed the $22 million mark at the end of March, according to Box Office Mojo, and that without any screenings yet in South America, North America or most of Europe."
Whoopee. Only $80-$100 million to go!

How is that kind? That's more like a concession than praise!
"Regardless of whether or not the fans will agree with it, they will be entertained. "
Entertained in a so-bad-it's-good way, maybe.

  13. Ian says:

I did "give it a chance", and watched it. It was absolutely awful. I'm not even a fan of Dragonball, and even I could tell it was an insult to the franchise. Fans, you have my sympathy.

  14. Boog says:

They don't want to make a movie people will hate?
    Then why make this one?
This movie looks like someone worse than Uwe Boll made it.

  15. Brian H. says:

Alright I am going to see it because the people I know and have talked to said it was entertaining. Stop complaining about it not following Dragonball perfectly. It's a totally different take on the DB story. I'm just tired of all these half ********* complaints when half if not more of you haven't even seen the damn thing. I'm american and im ashamed at how fans here treat any retelling of a childhood show like crap.

  16. Josh says:

I live in Japan and this movie has been out for awhile here and I've seen it.
It's fun, it's not great, but ti's entertaining and has a level of nostalgic charm.
I'll never understand American fanboys. My Japanese friends who are fans of the series don't even say they hate this movie. They simply smile and say it's different but entertaining. So everyone should chill out

    • Mike says:

Thank you so much for this reply at least I know I'm not alone in the world and that it is not just me who sees how ridiculous this all is

    • Azerik says:

It may have been entertaining, but it is a horribly made movie, and was made as a money grab. The story in the movie has no substance, and its characters are shallow and impossible t relate to..

    • what?, because one of your japenese friends said yeah ok it a alright film That means that it is…thats just hinging slightly on racism. so no im not going to agree with you because a japenese person said the film is entertaining. so because a japenese person liked it and the series is origanally japenese..that means his word is law.. i dont think so

    • what?, because one of your japenese friends said yeah ok it a alright film That means that it is…thats just hinging slightly on racism. so no im not going to agree with you because a japenese person said the film is entertaining. so because a japenese person liked it and the series is origanally japenese..that means his word is law.. i dont think so

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGlywxd2qLw
Read First. Forget the haircuts, the lengh, some styles. Stop excusing that "You can't make a movie with those haircuts without looking silly!". It's not that. You know what you did wrong. The story is wrong (No characters, Dragonball "prophecy matrix scheme", Roshi pervert, Bulma pervert doubleface), goku is a innocent guy, and it is all about how in the story they join him. There is no "EVIL ONE", just one army who wants the dragonball. Afterwards is all about training with Roshi, who only agree to train them because of Goku's grandpa. And the training is all about how it is not a common one (Looking for ONE rock in a jungle, planting seeds, wearing heavy cloth, etc). And afterwards come Piccolo, and not even the DBZ one, but the father.
But, worse than all that stuff. Let's forget all the story mistakes and changes. You TOOK AWAY AND KILLED the "Escence" of the characters. Those 3 examples are in this Video. Goku would never say "I am not prepared", that is why fandom is so angry. They didnt read or preserve anything from the original series. Goku was all about just fighting and big opponents, until they killed his best friend (who was erased from the movie), and then things get bad.
Goku would never say "COOL!", he is a innocent dumb kid, cmon.
And like everyone has said. We could talk for hours of everything that is wrong in this movie. And forget the hairstyle complaints, or setting, or story. Hours just on the escence thing.
Is like they saw AMV videos from the series. And took all the things they thought looked "cool" (Lets add the piccolo guy, then the monkey yeah!, oh the fights), then read the book synopsis on wikipedia and in the end, OF COURSE "But let's make everything really EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEME, they will LOVE this!".
DONT WATCH THIS MOVIE. DONT GIVE THEM MONEY. OR THEY DO THE SECOND ONE.
P.S. English dub sucks. Japanese and Spanish one are not that "cartoonish".
Also. I'm a film student. Wouldnt you love a DB Movie that mix all that action with the "MAGIC REALISM" (Yeah, Garcia Marquez) found in the original series and manga. It would work perfectly in the screen. I mean, it is so hard to make a "100 years of solitude" adaptation, but with DragonBall, you had the perfect excuse to make a great action movie, with a retelling of a known story (Because DB use so much from other folk tales, and even movies) in a fresh way, and with a new Magic Realism universe, you could have created.
    I hate you Fox.
    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2009/… <— That did it.

  22. Stubbz says:

There really are tons and tons of problems with this movie. Krillin, Tien, chaozu, and emperor pilaf. Even Oolong should have had is role in there. you cant have missing chracters. This movie should have been flawless and done right. Its spanning over 20 years of content. Goku should have been cast japanese and then you wouldnt have had a problem with the hair..for there hair can do wicked things…and yamcha should have been american…and tien russian and it just would have helped with there look. master roshi is old not chow yung fat..even jackie chan has been using old suits for his movie roles where he plays an old man. it shouldnt look so not gritty and should be more earthy. the crazy asian leader child from tropic thunder could be a better goku cast choice. i knew this movie was coming and it was destined to fail with a studio being so money grubby. he better have fucking nimbus too cuz so far i see no damn nimbus. should have shot this in a styul;e compared to 300 sin city and the sprit. at least they went back and made piccolo green. sorta. i am pissed cuz dragionball is my thing and always will be. ive spent oodles and boodles on collectibles, comics, shirts, games, dvds, and hours trying too catch the whole seasons in countinue on cartoon network, i would watch it every sturday…where is advisors too these damn movies…like just some nerd like me who gets paid too say well thats not even close go another way. there really is so much too say about this movie being made the way it has been. end of F—in story

  23. Stubbz says:

its like someone redoing f****g star wars and not having hans solo…chewbacca…or yoda in it…and having darth vader painted white and talking with a lisp.

  24. Nubcake says:

First off, I hate the crack on Speed Racer. That movie was incredibly entertaining.
As for Dragonball, the problem is simply that it doesn't feel like Dragonball at all. For one thing, the personalities are just off. Whether Goku was a kid or a teenager or an adult, he always had the same personality, which the movie fails to deliver. And you can basically apply this to every other character.
Furthermore, what's with the argument about Krillin, Tien, and Chiaotzu being left out because they aren't realistic? Krillin is human, for one. All they had to do was hire a midget/dwarf to play the role. And Piccolo, who IS in the movie, just happens to be a GREEN ALIEN in the anime. If they can make a green alien "realistic", why can't they put Krillin in? He's not just a side character, he was Goku's best friend. In fact, I think most would agree that prior to DBZ, he was the second most important character in the entire series.
If they had at least TRIED to stay true to the story, I'd probably enjoy it even if it wasn't that well made or acted. It's the fact that they basically took the name Dragonball, along with a few character names and vague themes, and tried to act as if it has any actual relation to the anime. It simply doesn't. It would be like making Peter Parker an action-hero tough guy, Mary Jane a slut, and Harry a gangster, all while deciding Parker shouldn't live with his aunt and uncle and instead giving him parents that play little to no role whatsoever. Oh, and the Green Goblin is a corrupt politician looking to start a war in the Middle East. It simply wouldn't be Spiderman…and that's the sort of thing "fanboys" have every right to complain about.

  25. Jsung says:

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE SEQUELS!!!! This movie is a disaster!!! from what ive heard he does a kamehameha and flys while doing it..it had me laughing in a bad way when i heard…Ill watch it when it comes on Nickelodeon or something. Oh and advice to whoever creates dvds and blu rays…don't waste your time on putting it on those wonderful discs…this movie might save VHS tape Sales or actually bring vhs back. And Whats with the PG rating? im sure the fans of this AMAZING show are all grown up to at least have a pg-13 rating..maybe thats just me..Some will Love and Some will buy the dvd for a frisbee then use it for a nice Coaster.. Good Luck DB…Good Luck

  26. Walrus says:

I'd seen this movie a while back … I don't really care about the fact that there's no Krillin, Tien etc.. or Goku's hair is not spiky enough.. or Goku is caucasian .. My problem with the film is that it doesn't capture the spirit of the Dragonball manga/anime at all!!! it's all wrong.. and the end fight between Goku and Piccolo is crap..

  27. Omega Shenron says:

"Chung, for one, has put full faith in Wong, who she believes has made some controversial changes in order to make the film a bit more mainstream to new viewers."
Mainstream…..more like Dragon Ball in name only.
Popular story?…..Ahhh well lets just change what everybody likes about the original so it can be mainstream……..Then wonder why after it flops.
    If it's not broke don't fix it…

  28. moo says:

Wongs next project should be 'Lord of the Rings: Evolution' A updated retelling of the Tolkein book, where Frodo is a high school student.
I could understand altering a few little things here and there (such as aesthetic changes to hair) . But when you alter so much as to make it unrecognizable in tone and story for the sake of 'mainstreaming it' (sounding suspiciously like blanding it up) it feels as though the filmmakers simply have contempt for the source material.
Example; from what I read, in the movie Chichi is a popular high school student who goku pines for. In the Anime/manga, Chichi is the one pining, while Goku is too nieve to notice. The former's a fairly universal storyline, but its simply not true to the characters or tone.
Given how embedded in popular culture this series is, most of these 'mainstreamings' feel superfluous at best, and at worst destroys the elements which people fell in love with in the first place. As a result, I can understand where some of the hate lies.

  29. nico says:

i dont know why they didnt cast tuan tran pro bodybuilder to play goku, he resembles him to a T

  30. Hotaru says:

First of all, as a half Japanese I just want to tell to the world that this movie was a slap to the face. It really makes me angry that they have the nerve to cast a White guy to play as a Japanese Hero & Icon. After watching this movie, me & my friends walked out in the theater really pissed off.
If they ever make a Dragon Ball movie again I really hope that they cast a Japanese or any Asian for the role of Goku.

  31. DK says:

IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THIS.
My girlfriend, who happens to be Asian, which means she has been saturated with Dragon Ball merchandise and promotional material all her life, but knows nothing of the storyline, simply what the characters look like(she's just not into it, whatever), was watching television with me the other day.
"Hey Babe, look! It's the Dragon Ball trailer!", I say.
"What? That's not Dragon Ball, stupid., she replies.
    "Really?" , I shout back.
    "________" , she says nothing.
FAN BOYS AROUND THE WORLD REST THEIR CASE.

  32. Janet says:

My God!! Take a pill, people! As much as I am anticipating this film (YES! Anticipating it!) and have already purchased advance tickets for this weekend, I must say the gnashing of teeth and wailing being done by the illiterate fan-bois has been tremendously entertaining these past few months.
Seriously, I assure you the course of mankind or the planet is not going to be irrevocably altered because of any non-literal depiction of the Dragonball saga. I would encourage you to raid your parents' liquor cabinet to take the edge off of your hysteria.

  33. whitestallion says:

It is understandable if Chund defends the movie. She's part of it. Otherwise, it maybe her last. And a replacement to take her role is possible. Therefore, does she has other choice? Perhaps, when she's all alone in her room, she might have any regrets accepting this kind of low budgetted film. 20th Century Fox? having this kind of movie? Is this how they are not affected by the global crisis? Common on guys, lets watch this….pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaassse! I'm beggiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing! Watch this movie as part of the DISASTER MOVIES II. I wont be suprised if they included this DB Z movie on the next part of Disaster Movie.

  34. whitestallion says:

They should never try to follow the success of Rush hour 1,2 and 3. Not all movies wherein Americans / Chinese or Japanese/Americans have succeeded in box office. Look at the Forbidden Kingdom. Both Jackie Chan and Jet Li are good movie celebrities and martial artist. But combining with an american boy to play a role in their movie – NOT GOOD. Better yet, movies that are known for having a characters belonging to a certain nationalities should only be played by them. Dragon Ball characters are well known as Japanese characters. They should have invited only Japanese or even Chinese Characters only.
Forbidden Kingdom is a story similar to those shown wherein there are three main characters lead by the monkey king. How come there is an incluion of american boy in this story? I have nothing against americans. They are definitely the best in making movies such as The Passion of Christ, Patriot, Independence Day and etc.

  35. whitestallion says:

I think, instead of having it played in all cinemas, why not have it played in any stage plays?

  36. whitestallion says:

Basically, this LOW BUDGETTED FILM has only eight characters. Goku, Chichi, Roshi, Yamcha, Piccolo and his assistant and Bulma to make the entire movie. Far from the anime version. Here are the list. Oh yeah, the movie is just the beginning. And hopefully….. HOPEFULLY, it will be the last.

Guys, it is very obvious, the 20th Century Cat (Fox) as well as the director (if indeed he is a director by nature), does not know what they are doing. They shoot and create movie, then simply cash-in some money. It is VERY IMPOSSIBLE they will make it in the box office much more world wide. Unless otherwise, they have tons of friends globally. He he he he!

  40. This article is completely biased.
It call people who hate the movie fan boys and acts as if we care about ticket sales of an Xmen movie. There are many reasons why this movie is bad, the hair, lack of characters, and the fact that he is in high school are the least of people's worries even though they are important.
How about the movies bad dialogue and writing like this line from Yamcha
CHEESE AND RICE, I just fried my nads.
How about the complete change in character? Goku acts like an average white boy hero main character I've seen in al movies and Piccolo acts like Darth Vader. How about the fact that they use Chi instead of Ki and change the Dragon to look Chinese making the movie culturally offensive to the Japanese?
You can't just say fan boys are pissed and put it on as news. I am the leader of a group to Boycott the movie and even though we only have a little over 200 members, I'm also an Officer in a group with over 1000 members. I tried to explain the flaws of this movie using in-depth character analysis, the movie itself, quotes from the actors showing they didn't know what they were doing and even anthropological explanations for why its offensive. Don't just call me a fan boy and blow me off, all major review of this movie are bad and the only good reviews are from people who haven't seen DB in the first place. Visit my page

I try to explain everything and tell you why this movie shouldn't be watched.

I watched the Dragonball movie…I thought it was the worst movie i've seen for a while which s saying a lot given some of the tripe out there right now.
I'm not a huge DB/DBZ fan but i've seen the anime and read some of the Manga and share the disapointment of fans everywhere with so many inconsitances, poor casting and lack of trademark features – e.g. Gokus hair.
I won't say the film was a complete disaster but its not the type of film that naturally appeals to many film goers over the age of 16. The only real audience beyond that which is might attract would of course be the fans – who either expect disapointment from trailers and adverts, or who will be disapointed after watching the film.
Haters are not good, they ruin the fun for everyone with violent actions – but when you put yourself in their position its really not hard to see why they can become abusive. The HP film delay is a perfect example, for me at least, i checked cinema sites expecting to get the HP time lists for later that month upon release and was met with a notice telling me its been delayed – for 7 months. Upon reading the reasons – basically money generated reasons – i, like many fans, became enraged.

  43. torauma says:

If this movie has not used the title "Dragonball", as a simple popcorn action movie, I would probably watched it. Actually, it has nothing to do with THE "Dragonball", beside characters names in some kind of teenager movie. Yeah, probably just a coincidence. Maybe it should have been re-titled as "Balls of Dragon", something like that to avoid any angry fans.
I say, let a Japanese tokusatsu director do the work and Akira Toriyama for script, preferably as a 3D animated movie. We don't need any more of those Super Sentai – translated to – Power Ranger westernization.

  44. finn says:

what it really comes down to is this. In a world where they can make a sin city movie work in the way they did, we all now know it would be POSSIBLE for a dragonball movie to get made correctly. Which means that fox made a conscience decision not too. I don't care about the hair, and to be honest most anime characters like goku are meant to be racially ambiguous (and in some cases like naruto or sailor moon their clearly meant to be white) They could have chosen to try something creative, something that hadn't been done before. I actually think that for all it's faults the speed racer movie at least did a good job of that. But instead they took the road more frequently traveled, the one of taking a well known franchise and running it into the ground. BTW I did see the movie with a bunch of my friends as a joke and it is just as bad as expected. Although this actress they talked to in the article was gorgeous and not all that bad in the film and I think given the right material could have made a fine chi chi.

  45. jinzuu says:

I wonder what Toriyama is thinking? He gets even more effortless money, but has his 20 year old masterpiece ruined.

  46. JCampbell says:

The thing is that even the plot in this movie is so forced, like the only important issue was to make it fit on the approved screen time.
and the story by itself…. who knows where do they got that scrip from, kinda think that I saw toriyama's name on the titles, if so bro please suicide.
When I saw the trailer, I said to myself forget about it, they must be saving the good stuff for the theaters, what a disappointment, It made me laugh but because is plain ridiculous.
the ladies are beautiful that's the only thing I actually liked.
there are no valid excuses, spiderman, the hulk(last one), Iron Man…. where good adaptations, or only the American stuff deserves to be treated with respect??

  47. dbaker says:

If haven't seen the movie yet, and don't really know if I want to. I'm a big Dragonball fan
and had no problem with Fox making a live action movie. I figured with all the special
effects technology today they could have made a movie that would reach new heights.
But I guess like a true fan I was wrong. I tried to stay optimistic. The very first thing I would have done is gone to ILM for special effects-come on who does it better than them?
Second had all the actors, directors watch the series to get the true flavor of the series.
As for a director, pick some one who grew up watching Dragonball. I want to see the movie, then again I don't, it should have beed truly epic (bigger that Star Wars if true effort
was put into it). By the way it should have beed ablut four hours long, no 85 min's. what's up with that???

  48. Kame says:

Whether or not that's true, you idiots sure did a good job at making a movie people hate.

  49. Nathan says:

Okay… a lot of the people posting don’t even know what dragonball is about. I have watched the original english version from when I was 3 years old (I am turning 26 just to let you guys know)…. I watched the fan subbed version (EVERY episode). When it comes to Hollywood movie adaptions of Anime, I typically go in with the lowest of low expectations. I think the real thing was trying to adapt it to a modern day feel. Think about it. Which kid do you know can do martial arts at the level of Jackie Chan??? That is Goku (He even fought his parody on the anime). For a modern day adaptation, it was actually pretty good. I would give it a 3.5/5. The fight scenes were okay. and the story, while changed, is fitting. Let me take your guy’s points 1 at a time.
Okay… Janet Wu: “How can you even think of making Dragonball without Krillin, Tien, and Chaouzu? ”
Easy…. don’t have them there. Seriously… they are main characters, but not THE main character. When were they in the major plot lines of GT? When in the post cell saga? Hell, even in the Piccollo DB fight? Goku defeated him in DB.
Fringe: At least watch it on DVD [or Netflix it] when it comes out. It is pretty good (MUCH better than I expected since all these “fans” hated it…. Considering I think I am one of the most hard core fans{have every movie… every episode… hell even some collectibles})
Sam: Just because you hate fox… don’t hate on the movie. Follow the advice I gave Fringe.
Miquelo: Yes… the ending was kind of weak… I actually liked it up to that point and then was like… what happened?
Dragonball De Evolution: “I fear hollywood will never let go of the caucasian protagonist in a foreign big budget movie.” They could have made him anything but white and that would make it okay?? Bad reason…
Kame: “Goku never went to high school. He’s not a skinny boy who chases after girls and cheats at his training.” I know… but how many 5-12 year olds do you know are good at Martial Arts to a point of which they would give MMA fighters a tough time? Kind of hard to believe. While it works great in the anime world, it could not work the real world. I thought they did it perfectly. He played the “stupid” student. You gotta watch for the scene with Goku in class. Funny as hell.
Kame: “Bulma isn’t the reincarnation of Laura Croft.” She played it pretty well minus the fact that she was a crazy gun slinger.
Kame: “Chi-Chi isn’t the popular high school ‘it-girl’ straight off The Real World.” Its a modern retelling. Its not called “Dragonball,” or “Dragonball Z.” Have you seen Dark Knight? An excellent if not the best superhero film of all time. However, it still has its changes from the main story line.
Kame: “Roshi’s not a middle-aged clean-cut man who’s embarrassed and afraid to be a pervert.” He wasn’t afraid. He felt up on Buluma a few times.
Kame: “Piccolo is not some random alien who wants to take over Earth for no reason. He never controlled the Oozaru in the manga/anime.” Remember… this is the beginning of the retelling of a series. They could really patch this up when they talk about Goku’s heritage and they find out that Oozaru just really means ape (or for Sayajins… their ape form).
Kame: “And how the heck is ‘Goku’ the same Oozaru that helped Piccolo 2000 years ago if he’s only 18?” He isn’t…. once again…. look at the logic from above.
Masato: stop hating. Watch it on DVD.
Stubbz: “cuz dragionball is my thing and always will be….[You spent] hours trying too catch the whole seasons in countinue on cartoon network”….
I don’t know any loyal fan that would watch the DBZ or DB in ENGLISH on Cartoon Network… The real fan would watch it in Japanese with the not so annoying voices, acting, and perfect storyline. Hell.. the dubbed version of DBZ/DB/DBGT was EASILY worse than the movie.
Nubcake: “Whether Goku was a kid or a teenager or an adult, he always had the same personality, which the movie fails to deliver. And you can basically apply this to every other character.” Not really…. Goku and his comments when talking to chi chi for the first time. Master Roshi touching Buluma’s ass. Picollo wanting to destroy/rule Earth. Yamacha wanting money…
Jsung: “from what ive heard he does a kamehameha and flys while doing it..it had me laughing in a bad way when i heard”…. He does this in the anime and while it doesn’t look CRAZY badass… it is actually decent…. reminded me of a cross between the Kamehameha and the Ryu Gen Fist Explosion.

    • Ronald Pearson says:

Thank you you are abouthe only fan tht thinks this movie was decent it wasnt perfect hell ididnt think it would be yes they could of put more into but thats ok as long as the core of the story is there thats what matters id lik to see a sequel as long as there are more characters and more fight scenes
he should be out of schoolat this point thank god id rather have seen him kamehameha on the bullies from school i would have, people fear change and the ignorant masses who are signing a petition to keep sequels being made for the dbz origanal fans from enjoying future sequels and bringing a new perspective to the dragon ball z world

  50. 18 says:

Fangirl, you couldn't be more right: If you're not basing the movie on the anime (I'm not even asking for the manga), why do you even bother to put its name on it??? I'd just make a whole original movie with my own characters, names, plots, etc. and avoid al the trouble of angry fans.
Seems like the only three things they have in common with the anime are: Some of the names of the character's, the dragon balls and master roshi's hawaiian shirt.
I'm not a big DB fan, but i got to see some chapters during high school (my friends loved it, I wanted to know what the hell were they talking about), and it hurts me even to see the posters, they seriously ripped off too many childhood and teenage memories.

  51. Freddy says:

I just watched the movie and i just felt really sad. I’ve read the comments and both sides have valid points but overall, no amount of consideration can save this movie from being a flop.
From a fan point of view, this movie really lacked all the essential things that made it the dragonball created by Akira Toriyama. Too many elements of the story, characters, themes were reconstructed. The result was totally something new, far from the familiar dragon ball story of old. The basic things that made dragonball so successful was ignored to make it more universal. But the point of making a dragonball movie was the fact that by itself, it was unique. Its sad that the director and producers didnt at least read the manga or watch the anime. It would have helped a lot.
From a movie go-er point of view, the movie was a mess. The story was poorly told. There were so many holes in the storyline that I struggled to keep up. The biggest one was probably the fact that Goku was the Oozaru. He was 18, where Picollo was 2000 years ago. Even if it was 2 different Oozarus, how did Picollo know that Goku was the Oozaru.
As for the special effects, fight scenes, and cinematography, it was in a word… cheap. It is a given that Dragon ball is a difficult project. Putting artwork in live action is truly a task, especially since dragon ball used energy blasts and action that just isnt possible in real life. Yet, despite this impossibility, it looked like Fox didn’t even try. In other movies, like the matrix, star trek, star wars, spiderman, etc, there was an effort to try to bring imagination to life. Moreover, Dragonball is an action movie, but this was also missing. Chow Yun Fat is a martial arts icon just like his character, but in the movie he seemed terribly lacking. The fight between Goku and Picollo in the end, where I assume was like a fight between good and evil ended up in waterballon fight like battle. No kung fu, no use of magic extendable staff, no magic floating cloud. Also, somehow, the tournament kinda reminded me of Mortal Combat and thats not a good thing.
Despite these, i found several things good about the movie. 1) the capsule bike wasnt bad. 2) Ms Chung acted well, except that Chi Chi has a stronger personality. 3) the site locations werent bad…. thats about it. Everyone else’s acting was weak. The costumes were bad replicas….
Overall, I wouldnt watch this again or recommend it to any of my friends. In case a sequel does come out, I’d just watch it on video as with any other B movie.

Just wanted to clear up[ a few MAJOR misconceptions: First of all, Krillin actually appears in Dragon Ball episode 14 and is there throughout. In fact, he and Goku grow up together quite literally while training under Roshi. That's where the entire "best friend" thing comes in. Actually, Tien is the last major "holdover", as I believe someone put it, to appear in Dragon Ball. Secondly: Krillin was 5 feet tall. He's not a dwarf/midget/little person, whatever you find the least degrading. Thirdly: Yamcha got the shortest end of the stick in this film. He was changed from a brilliant bandit that had stalking and raiding down to an art form and Martial Arts expert to a braindead surf bum that digs holes in the desert waiting for people to fall in so he can charge them cash to pull him out. Oh, and did I mention they make him not only unable to fight, but a coward that hid behind Bulma while she shot off her guns they decided to give her for whatever reason. (Most likely a role reversal in that regard to please the Feminist Lobby in Hollywood) Finally:Things like hair are acceptable changes, yes. Heck, I even think that the whole school thing wouldn't have broken the movie. But here's what did: They completely stripped away the personalities of who the characters are. Seriously, if you didn't hear the names, you wouldn't know who they were supposed to be. Plus the plot was chopped and changed so much… the only thing remotely similar is that they're looking for Dragon Balls, and even the reason why they're doing that has been radically altered. As has the role of the villain in all this. It's just… it reached a point where it was no longer an adaptation, but someone else's story that leased the character names to help sell it. And it frankly disgusted the man that created it so much that when they refused to listen to him, Akira Toriyama himself walked right off the set. It was unethical, it was sloppy, and now they're paying for it.

This movie sucked. But this is my opinion of course. I think many were mad that this justin guy is white instead of getting a japanese guy, but when you think about it goku wasn't even japanese, he was an alien. justin kind of looked the part.. but not really. they could've got someone way better. no krillin? no yamcha? no tien? wat the heck is up with that??? i understand a lot had to be cut out in order to make the movie, but they cut out actual characters that have a very important role in the series. goku was suppose to be way younger, he NEVER went to school (come on now, we all loved his naive yet loving self), he ate like a starving dog (but we loved it) and so forth. where was goku's tail? That's the reason he would change into a monkey in the first place and he stopped changing after he lost his tail.. i can't remember exactly how its been a long time but didn't it get cut off? i remember how gohan got his yanked out by piccolo. and another thing!! it wasn't even piccolo that goku fought in dragonball, it was King piccolo! :p this movie reeks for those who love the original DB series. i wouldn't waste money on it, just go to one of those bootleg movie sites like heepo.com and watch it there or wait till its on TV.

Try explaining these changes to a three year old. Seriously it would have been better to make a movie that was set in the db universe even if it wasn’t about Goku and friends. I was just playing batman arkham asylum, a game that was just so close to the series source that when I watched Db evolution, a movie that was so far from the series source that I was utterly disappointed. The setting was all wrong. Goku was originally a very naive kid who didn’t know what a car was or even girls. He couldn’t tell boys and girls apart other than by pat-pat. Bulma was whiny and not a very competent fighter. She was actually looking for the dragonballs so she could wish for a boyfriend. Goku for a while actually thought his dragonball was his grandpa who he had actually killed when he turned into a giant ape one night of a full moon. And it was the full moon not eclipse and he had a tail that when removed would prevent him from transforming. Yamcha wanted the dragonballs so he could wish that he wouldn’t be afraid of pretty girls and he had a little shape-shifting friend named puar. There was a pig named oolong. The first main threat that Goku faced was emperor Pilaf. The girl that assisted Piccolo in the movie was actually one of Pilaf’s henchmen and she wasn’t very competent. Goku then trained with Master Roshi and though Yun Chow Fat is a good actor, he should have been portrayed older. Goku was forced to many different tasks such as moving a giant boulder along with krillin who didn’t like Goku very much, he cheated and was also pretty condescending to Goku, but somewhere along the way he and Goku became very good friends. After training all three entered the tournament with Master Roshi just barely defeating Goku. The next major enemy Goku faced was the Red Ribbon Army then King Piccolo was the next enemy. In the series he wanted to wish for eternal youth. That was also a plot hole the movie created. If Goku was Oozaru then what was Piccolo going to wish for. Goku had received training with Korin the cat through a rigorous method of going up and down his tower. He also met a swordsman named Yajirobe who was actually a very competent fighter who managed to defeat Cymbal, one of King Piccolo’s henchmen. After Goku defeats King Piccolo, King Piccolo spits out an egg that hatches into his reincarnation. Piccolo Jr. which is the Piccolo that is shown for the rest of the series. Goku goes to train at Kami’s Lookout which is above Korin’s tower. Piccolo and Goku fight at the tournament after Goku and Chi Chi fight and Goku learns that Chi Chi is mad at him about when he promised to marry her. He replies that he thought marriage had something to do with food but says that he will still marry her anyway, appeasing her anger. During the fight Piccolo gets really big and Goku refuses the help of his friends so that by the tournament rules he could win fair and square. Afterward Goku and Chi chi are about to get married, but the Ox king’s house catches fire again and so Goku rushes in to get Chi Chi’s mother’s wedding dress. then they marry and well the show ends and DBZ starts.
I have some problems with their mechanics. Ki was never talked about that much in the way they talked about it. The movie made it sound spiritual while the show made it sound physical. The color of the energy was more about power rather than who was good and bad like in the movie. Piccolo shows signs of “the force” rather than energy like the show would have done (he would have just blasted it rather than force crushing it). Master Roshi mentions in the show that it took him 50 years to master the Kahemahema wave while Goku master’s it in a matter of minutes. In the movie the movements are wrong and too elaborate for the Kahemahema wave and it was more of an orb attack than a wave. Alson Goku jumped at the end and did the Kahemahema wave that was wrong too. The force from the energy would have propelled him backwards (like Superman stopping a train) not forward. Also, at least in the beginning, they mispronounced Piccolo. I could probably go on and on about the changes they made not just to the story, but the general spirit of Dragonball that drew me to it.

this movie sucked! if anyone really liked it they have already forgotten it and honestly never cared for the series mythology in the first place. In fact screw the series, a movie is a movie. this movie was just bad.

  58. Ray says:

This movie is good, if you don't know the series and you like low quality films.

  59. Sean says:

Movie is just bad. Story is very weak. Is more like a parody which it would have been ok as a low budget parody. Instead they made the kame-hame-ha wave a joke. And what is this whole Air bending lol goku just watched Roshi do the kame-hame-ha once and then copied him and did it to a car.

But lets view it as a completely different not DBZ movie.

Story makes little to no sense. The transformation of goku was terrible. Looked so fake. The lines were also just bad.

Anyway enough ranting just saw it on one of the movie channels and had to make a comment.

This question goes out to all the die hard fans of Dragon Ball Z. If you where given enough money to make 3-4 solid movies based off of the original Dragon Ball Z animated series, lets just say that if you were to make 4 instead of 3 movies you wouldn't have as much money to have really good special effects in one of the 4 but you could follow the story more closely but three movies instead of 4 would get really good special effects but the story line would be condensed.
    1) who would you get to direct the movie?
    2) who would make up the cast ( specific tell me the actual name of the actor or actress and what role you would have them play)?
    3) how would you condense all of the Dragon Ball and Dragon ball Z episodes into 3-4 movie (what would leave out what would you keep specifics)?
    4) last what would satisfy you as a fan in the end?

the reason i ask this is because i here a lot of fans complaining on how much Fox destroyed the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z serious by making this movie, but what i don't see is any alternatives. i mean people or fans are so eager to write nasty remarks on how bad the movie is but if your going to hate on something you need to actually bring an argument to the table not just say they didn't follow the story or that the actors did a bad job or that Fox didn't throw enough money at a movie like this. I'm just saying if Fox or any other production company gave every penny to making every movie they release then they would go broke after the first dozen movies or so because the reality is they just wouldn't get enough back in the long run. consumers are unpredictable everyone has different taste in movies. not every person in the world is going to see a movie because a production company like Fox put all their money into making the film. Plus when your in the movie making business you need to think about future films too, you cant just focus on a single serious. there are plenty of movies to be made and you need money to make those films too. If you take a look at harry potter, you would realize that Harry Potter didn't go golden until the second or third film, and now that its so well known and liked, fans have a hard time letting go of it. so now when harry potter ends, production companies are going to have a hard time replacing the series since all the fans will compare every new series to harry potter and of course when you put a titan and a regular human next to each other the human is always going to be insignificant, but if you let it the human can also grow to be a titan. think about it.

This movie was doomed by design, Dragonball is pretty awful on it's own, add a cast of funny white folks and it just gets funnier to me.

  62. dragonball1282 says:

i love dragonball too. like every cartoon that has been made realistic story has to changed a bit to make believeable. for what they have done and what i have seen i love how the movie turned out. most like original charicters will be brought in like any other movie by time of eventsand hopefully stay as true as they can to there description of who they are,. can wait to see whats in stored next.

  63. Azerik says:

When it was announced, I was thrilled. When I saw the trailer, I was disappointed but still ready to give ti a chance. When I saw it in the theater, I walked out halfway through.

The premise of the movie's story is so radically different from the manga, that the only similarities are the names of the few characters from it that make an appearance, and the existence of the Dragon Balls. All the excuses listed in this article about making it mainstream, are exactly the problem with the movie. Dragon Ball is not mainstream, and it never will be. The allure of the series is its wackiness, and its unconventional style. They even removed an extremely pivotal character, Krillin, who is so important to the character of Goku, as his best friend and rival.

I gave it a chance, and it dissapointed on so many levels, and I've talked to people hwo never watched Dragon Ball, and even they didn't like it. It was a travesty, and sugar coating the reasons for why I've labeled it as such, won''t change that.

  68. Ben Chacon-Torres says:

The movie was a BIG disappointment.

The same goes with the movie, The Last Airbendor.

It seems like directors, and well the production companies are not seeing the value of the Dragon Ball Saga.

The budget was very low. This kind of film should be EPIC! It has the same value as a movie like Green Lantern or Thor, yet it got *belittled.* Anyone who’s watched this anime cartoon series before knows how much they enjoyed watching it!

It shouldv been given a REAL shot! If there were special effects like those of the recent films: AVATAR, Thor, Transformers, Superman (because GOKU is like the asian version), The Green Lantern, etc. The film would have been Guarranteed to generate a HUGE profit! From all ages.

These Directors and Production companies need to get their heads together and realize what a BIG deal it is to make a Movie of this status right!

I’m certain I am not the only one with these thoughts.

  69. Chipperz says:

The first time I saw this was when I was watching the sky movies channel and even then I couldn't keep concentrated for that long. I kept changing channels because it felt so boring and terrible and when I came back to it occasionally just to see the ending. I wasn't even a Dragon ball fan back then and that was the first time I had watched anything related to Dragon ball. It put me off from watching anything to do with Dragon ball for a long time.

Then looking over Chung trying to defend this movie as a now Dragonball fan, it's ten times worse. Missing characters, "Amazing fight scenes" (If the fight scenes alone are what movies are coming to, then it's all downhill from here.) and just the story is bad.

  70. Buttered tost says:

The movie wasn't perfect in all the details but i think it captured the important details.
i think it was a good movie that captured the spirit of the characters well and a good portion of the facts. yea it was missing krillin but did any one stop to think about the contracts maby they wouldn't let fox use all the bits of the story and demanded changes so it wouldn't be the same. yea maby some of the affects looked cheesy to people but do you know what a ball of ki looks like show me what its suppose to look like then you can say that looks fake.
on another note i hear people whining and moaning Goku is asin. if you were a real fan of dbz you would remember he came from another planet and is not human soooo if he is a space asin thats not human i guess that would make me a moldy piece of bread that shifts between dimensions.
