Comic-Con: ‘Twilight’ star Robert Pattinson talks about the Entertainment Weekly cover

July 25, 2008 | 5:33 p.m.

As promised, a Comic-Con burning questions session with “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson, who talked to Hero Complex about perfecting an American accent, the pressure to play Earth’s most “beautiful” vampire, and what he really thought of that Entertainment Weekly cover. (Don’t forget to check out our video of him and the play-by-play of yesterday’s "Twilight" panel.)

First things first: Let’s talk about that EW cover. Ewcover_twilight_2
Um, I guess my hair turned into a little bit of a toupee, didn’t it? I don’t know what happened. Laughs. I just sort of was like, it’s only out for a week anyway.

Tell us about having to play “beautiful.”
When I first read the script and heard about the casting I was thinking, ‘This is impossible. This is physically impossible to play this part.’ I kind of preempted what everyone’s reaction would be. There was also a very real possibility that you could get so freaked out by having to look ‘beautiful’ all the time that you just end up doing the whole thing, like, pouting. Like, ‘Can I just cut all my lines and just stand still so you can shoot it really well?’

So what’d you do?
I thought about it a lot. It was kind of a deceptively complicated character to play. When you look at what Edward says, it seems like he always says the right thing. Always just the perfect gentleman. But when you put it in the context of his actual life situation and it doesn’t compute that he would be this completely easygoing, normal guy. That’s what he was before, then he got bit. He’s still trying to be a nice guy, but he’s also killed like 50 people, so he’s kind of in a state of constant penance.

Ah yes, we know you read Stephenie Meyer‘s manuscript for “Midnight Sun,” essentially a re-write of “Twilight” from Edward’s point of view. It won’t be published for a while. Any tidbits?
Bella never knows what’s going on inside Edward’s head. Throughout the entire series of books, she never really knows who he is. In ‘Midnight Sun,’ you find that he hides a lot from her, you find out the things that he’s hidden. Even basic things like there are other vampires who are going to kill her; I mean he kind of lies about it for ages.

Did it help you do anything different with the part?
It’s interesting in “Midnight Sun” he’s kind of disgusted with himself, which is kind of how I saw Edward anyways. He knows (his relationship with Bella) is right but he can’t stand the fact that he keeps hanging around her. It’s like ‘I know I’m in love with her, I know that’s all well and good, but I shouldn’t be doing this. I’m a vampire, I should just accept that and kill myself now.’ It’s a lot of self-loathing. Laughs. And I wanted to play it 100% self-loathing the whole time, and nobody would let me. They had to kind of lighten me up a bit.

Might we hear more about this reported journal you kept to prepare for playing Edward?
I don’t know where the whole journal idea came from. I mean, I just wrote tons and tons of notes. I had like six versions of the script. I wrote of that while I was in Portland (where the movie was shot) for two months by myself. I was there before (director) Catherine Hardwicke or anyone else.

To get into character?
I wouldn’t be doing anything in London that would be of any help, and I thought that just being separated from anything that I knew would be good. Also, the accent. I thought it would be helpful if I just pretended to be American for two months.

How do you think it turned out?
It’s supposed to be sort of old-fashioned America. I haven’t actually seen it yet, but hopefully it worked out.

Thank you LA Times for focusing on Rob. He deserves your attention. He has all the attributes to be a huge movie star. So few people realise yet what a fantastic actor he is. But they soon will.

  2. mellisajay says:

Rob is awesome in all the teasers ive seen. Cant wait for the movie… im wearing my "Mrs. Cullen" shirt to the release party… http://twilightshirts.com/shirt/mrscullen

  3. Insomnia says:

Thanks for asking really good questions. It's annoying when we read articles that ask repetitive and obvious questions. I'm on a mission to get questions asked that are unique, interesting (maybe even fun and random), and thought-provoking. :D

  4. Emily says:

Thanks for this. I love reading about Rob. He's fascinating. There's so much to talk to him about. Next time ask him about the Salvador Dali film.

  5. shannon says:

Rob's comments about Midnight Sun really piqued my interest becasue as fans we've only been able to read the rough draft of the first chapter. We have come to see Edward as perfect through Bella's eyes, but I am very curious to find out more about his inner torment. It sounds like he has hidden a lot.
Thank you for the wonderful article. I also love the freshness of your questions! I was at Comic Con and it was excruciating to see Rob and Kristen so uncomfortable in that setting. They seemed incapable of coherency. I've loved watching all the interviews in other settings because we've been able to see the collected and intelligent Rob and Kristen.

  6. Lollie says:

Finally some good questions!!!!!!!!I was hoping we could know more about the movie, the characters and the actors through the Comic Con but then it turned out to be a complete madness there!I mean I laughed my head off watching the Panel but then I thought "well, where are the real questions?" So thank you for this interview. Rob obviously has so much to say about Edward and the movie and he's interesting and fascinating to read or to hear!
My curiosity over Midnight Sun's just increasing!I'm so eager to read Edward's pov!

  7. Sanguina says:

I knew from when Rob was cast that he would delve into Edward. He seems like one who becomes truly immersed in his roles and I cannot wait to see him as Edward. Thank you for the amazing questions and for giving Rob a chance to answer speculatively and coherently without thousands of girls screaming at him about nothing relating to the film! Brilliant interview.

  8. Shelly says:

Denise many thanks for writing an excellent article on Rob. The LA Times and MTV are doing Rob proud. His fans do appreciate it. If the LA Times have a chance to review his new film 'How to be' at the Rhode Island film festival in early August I'm sure fans would be delighted to read about it. The festival has already posted that they have been inundated with interest to see it. Looks like the fascination with Rob isnt just focused on Twilight. Also with Little Ashes coming out in November in America its the perfect opportunity to talk to Rob about how he went about preparing to play Salvador Dali. The film sounds fascinating. Take a scissors with you next time you interview him Denise and just trim that hair a tiny bit.

  9. Robin says:

Thank you so much for inteligent questions. We actually found out new info! Wow, real questions. Comic Con was an embarassent! Those are not the TWilight fans I want to here from.

  10. Lissete says:

Yay! I'm so glad Robert is really into his character, and that he understands it all. It makes me feel relieved and let's me know they have chosen the right guy. Very good questions, also. Thanks Denise!

  11. Yvette says:

Its really cool that his american accent sounds like old fashioned because that is from a time that Edward is accoustemed to

  12. Chela85 says:

Thanks so much for the interview!!! I really like Robert Pattinson and I'm really thankful to him for all the hard work he put into being our 'Edward Cullen.' He really got in deep and it shows. Thanks Rob!

  13. Haley says:

Edward is way different than I thought. I am rereading twilight right now and it's so different when they are just friends. I hope Stephenie will publish Midnight Sun. We really don't know that much about Edward. He is probably afraid to tell Bella how violent he is. He's kind of a quiet guy, but he's the perfect gentleman. In the series Bella never really wonders how violent Edward is. Wow this interview was great! It really has me thinking more about how violent Edward can be and looking beyond his sweet, crooked smile (by the way Rob, you did a fantastic job on Edward's smile!) i've gotten so swept away by how amazing and kind Edward is that I never really thought about how violent Edward can truly be. I'm probably going to cry my eyes out when i read Midnight Sun(if it gets published) because I would hear how violent he is, but I would love to get to know him a lot better. I'm going to stop myself there because I can go on all day :)

  14. littlewing says:

Great article these are the questions the fans should have asked him last week . It cool to know who he prepared for this role. i hope as the film get's closer and they do more and more press, thay are asked these types of questions.

  15. Debra says:

Intelligent wise questions. Thanks Rob for the insight. I loved what I have read so far with 'Midnight Sun'. It gave true perspective on what's in Edwards head. Im not surprised by his self-loathing and boredom in the beginning, it wasn't hard to read Edwards inner workings in Twilight. I suppose a reader will see what they absolutely find necessary. I love the dark side of Edward. I also love the fact he is so torn by her blood and the love he feels for Bella. A line I remember well, he hated the way she smelled after her transfusion. It was all wrong.
Well, Rob.. you are all right for this part. Hope this film is a success, I want to see more of you in New Moon.

  16. emilyy says:

i love him! and his hair makes him more loveable. but i actually think edward would sound good with an english accent. i mean i've heard rob's edward accent and its good, but i actually think a british accent would fit edward, because hes like so sophisticated and classical.

  17. sara says:

i haven't seen the movie yet but i'am exited to see it cause when i read twilight i thought it would be really interesting to do a movie on it and they did do a movie and that's good to know but i thought they would put someone more buetiful then robert i'am not saying that he is not cute at all but still he so not that beutiful and when i saw some of his intervews it seems that he thinks alot of himself witch he shouldn't and it seems that he don't respect or appericate his fan witch he should… but still i don't hate

  18. J Mary says:

Good questions! Thanks for asking something intelligent of the actors, and mentioning the strange EW Cover. Midnight Sun will be interesting to read and give the fans something to look forward to, which I just heard about today. Great casting with Kristen and Rob. After reading about the negative comments online about casting Rob, then seeing the preview online, I find it hard to believe people would be unhappy with the choice. I can not imagine anyone else playing this role now. From what I have seen Rob seems to be doing a great job with the multi-layered character, and am looking forward to the movie. I wish him luck in the future with more acting gigs!

  19. Daryitzy says:

  20. Bobbie says:

Thank you guys a lot, for getting time with Rob, and thanks to Rob, too!! I'm sure you (he) will an amazing Edward. We Twilighters know that it is going to be really hard, to play such a perfect person, but I'm sure! it will be absolutely wonderful!
    Love

  21. Chantel V says:

Thanks so much for this interview with Rob. I think he's just AMAZING and I know he will meet all my expectations of Edward. I can't wait for the movie to come out and i'm also very excited for his role as Salvador Dali. – much love, Chantel

  22. Kaylyn says:

    I LOVE EDWARD !

  23. jenny says:

    * i lovee the twilight poster of EDWARD <3 it looks amazing in my room :D

  24. Lillie says:

Rob is a really good actor but I read a magizine and it said that New Moon was in grave danger… because of something between him and Kristen. I just hope they see him through and realize they're not going to finde some one as good as him. Besides if they get rid of him the fans will die. …I LOVE ROB….even though he doesnt like kids uder 17…..ugh….

  25. amanda Salazar says:

i like this artical it kinda funny reading it! =D

  26. person says:

god he is an ugly edward, sigh

  27. Beth says:

Who ever did Robert Pattinsons make-up and hair on this cover are horrible! They made him look too feminine in the face. I think Robert Pattinson is a great actor and gorgeous but they didn't do him justice here at all! Kristen looks beautiful.

  28. team cullens says:

twilightis undescribable we love it and really love edward and bella(kristen and rob)so all u cast we love u

  29. Corundum says:

He would NEVER have said "anyways"–he speaks the Queen's English, so he would have said "anyway".

  30. marcela says:
