Have suitcase, will fly: ‘Iron Man 2’ has cool new armor in the bag

April 27, 2010 | 6:51 a.m.

Tony Stark breaks all the rules (even the one that says superheroes must keep a secret identity), and he always seems to come out on top — that’s why we love him. But now comes “Iron Man 2,” a film about secret dangers, the sins of the father and the nasty price of modern celebrity. The movie lands May 7 in the U.S., and every day until then, we’ll have behind-the-scenes scoops on the summer’s most anticipated film and a look at all things Iron Man.

Today we have three crackling scenes from “Iron Man 2.” The first will bring a smile to face of anybody who admires a great cinema gizmo. In this scene, Tony Stark is trying to recover from a sneak attack by a mysterious Russian foe who attacks the billionaire superhero while he’s on the race course in Monaco. The setting evokes some classic James Bond globe trotting but old 007 never had a gadget like this

There’s a different sort of snap in this second scene, where Robert Downey Jr, as Stark, and Gwyneth Paltrow, as Pepper Potts, seem almost to have the think-fast-and-wink rhythm of Howard Hawks-style screwball comedy. And Scarlett Johansson also brings a special something to the screen…

After the nasty business in Monaco, Stark goes to find out more about the man who tried to kill him. The cryptic conversation with Ivan Vanko , portrayed by the burly Mickey Rourke, seeds the plot points and themes that will sprout as the movie moves along.

Thanks for reading. Stop by tomorrow for in-depth coverage of tonight’s “Iron Man 2” premiere in Hollywood.
