Yuk yuks with Yoda? Lucasfilm developing a ‘Star Wars’ comedy series

April 06, 2010 | 7:25 p.m.

There’s a burgeoning cottage industry in animated “Star Wars” parodies these days, and George Lucas, not wanting to be left behind, is hopping on the bandwagon.

Lucasfilm Animation is developing an animated series to look at the lighter side of Ewoks, Storm Troopers and Gungans and it has enlisted the aid of “Robot Chicken” creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, as well as “Daily Show” writer Brendan Hay.

In the press release, Green says “The ‘Star Wars’ universe is so dense and rich; it’s crazy to think that there aren’t normal, mundane everyday problems in a world so well-defined.” He goes on to say “What do these characters do when they’re not overthrowing Empires?”

There’s still no word on when or where this series will be seen.

Does this mean we’ll get treated to story lines involving Darth Vader’s backed-up toilet? Or Admiral Ackbar and wife fussing over a dinner party for Mon Mothma? And can Lucasfilm’s efforts possibly top the never-ending stream of clips and parodies already flooding the Internet? Only time will tell.

The Star Wars sketches on Robot Chicken were brilliantly hilarious. My hopes for this are higher than the initial idea might warrant. Now they just need to keep Lucas away from it.

Who cares? Why doesn't George Lucas create a new, original story if he really has any ounce of creativity in him as an artist instead of continuing to recycle his only idea from 30 years ago?

  4. Frank Sim says:

I thought he already had a comedy series. Wasn't it called Episodes I, II and III?

  5. Trent says:

    There you have it:
"Star Wars" is officially a joke.

  6. James Doohickey says:

I have a bad feeling about this.

  7. J. M. says:

To quote Darth Vader in Episode III: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
George Lucas's last major venture into comedy resulted in the abomination that was Jar Jar Binks. This one apparently involves Ewoks. Where is your God now?

  8. Dan L. says:

Why bother? Nothing they come up with could ever top the Star Wars Christmas Special for pure comedy goodness.

  9. Peter Kopetka says:

Sweetie, I got it wrong, Lucas is developing a Star Wars Comedy. Love You

  10. First episode, starring Jar Jar Binks: GUNGAN DIN

Please… let it die a natural death.
The corpse has already been revived 3 times too many.
How about a remake of Amos-n-Andy, I think this is up to Lucas's remaining ability… after all, it's just Jar Jar in a taxi.
