“Insurgent,” which follows last year’s “Divergent,” is based on the second novel in Veronica Roth’s bestselling YA trilogy. The tale follows young heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Woodley), a girl who discovers she doesn’t fit neatly into one of five rigidly divided societal factions in a dystopian future version of Chicago, but rather has aptitude for multiple factions — a dangerous trait known as divergence. She joins Dauntless, the faction based on bravery, to hide her secret, and there meets love interest Four (James).
In “Insurgent,” Tris and her friends are fugitives on the run from ruthless leader of Erudite (the faction based on knowledge) Jeanine (Winslet), who is hellbent on hunting down divergent people like Tris.
“Divergent” earned more than $288 million at the international box office last year. “Insurgent,” slated for release March 20, is directed by Robert Schwentke (“The Time Traveler’s Wife,” “Flightplan,” “Red”). In addition to Woodley, James, Winslet, Watts and Spencer, the movie features Ashley Judd, Zoë Kravitz, Maggie Q, Keiynan Lonsdale, Mekhi Phifer, Miles Teller, Ray Stevenson and Jai Courtney.
The third book in Roth’s dystopian adventure series, “Allegiant,” will be split into two films, due out in 2016 and 2017.
