A new poster for Marvel’s upcoming tentpole superhero movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron” unites the entire team as well as revealing new character Vision.
The poster, which was released on The Avengers Twitter feed, features the original cinematic Avengers — the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) — as well as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and new recruits Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).
But flying above the pack is a caped figure, obscured by the sun, whom comics fans may recognize as Vision, an evolved form of Tony Stark’s artificially intelligent butler Jarvis. The character, voiced in the film by Paul Bettany, was created by Stan Lee, Roy Thomas and John Buscema and introduced in a 1968 issue of “The Avengers.”
In the upcoming “Age of Ultron,” the Marvel heroes will face off against the eponymous villain — an artificial intelligence with a robotic body, portrayed by James Spader. In the new poster, Ultron’s drones are depicted in flight, descending on the Avengers.
Missing from the poster is any trace of the stars of the upcoming Phase 3 Marvel films, including Black Panther, Doctor Strange, the Inhumans and Captain Marvel. Fans are hoping the characters will cameo in “Age of Ultron”; rumors also abound that Spider-Man will make an appearance after Sony and Marvel Studios spun a deal that will introduce the webslinger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Age of Ultron” is directed by Joss Whedon, who helmed 2012’s summer blockbuster smash “The Avengers,” which earned more than $1.5 billion worldwide, and was hailed as witty and worthy of its hype.
The film is due in theaters May 1.
